Kinja'd!!!

He’s needed to sell his late mother’s car for a while now: 1995 Chrysler Concorde, garage-kept all its life, and just 28K original miles. It’s literally one of those cars that a little old lady only drove to church on Sundays.

Yesterday, he talked to a guy whose nephew needed a first car. He was willing to come back later in the week and pay $2,200. Today, he met with another buyer who offered $1,700 ($100 below KBB), and he took it. I asked him why he didn’t hold out for the first buyer, but he said he “just wanted to get the thing sold.” I do love him, but he could have made hundreds more if he just tried a little harder.

Sometimes that extra $500 is not worth the stress required when you really don’t want to do the job in the first place.

in much the same way, i dont like to sell stuff. i know what i have into a car/truck, and know how hard it is to find another in AS clean of condition as for what i am trying to give it away for. i usually figure what i just spent, and what i have into the car, and try to break even with just THAT....... its hard to sell/give away a car when you dont need the money.....

To be fair, you never know if the first buyer would have come back or not.

And, what SilentButNotReallyDeadly said - sometimes it’s better to just rip the band aid off on a job you don’t want to do.

Or, perhaps someone more willing/able could have taken over the job, and gotten more $$ out of it. I don’t know these cars, but for a pristine example like that, even $2200 seems cheap (?)

I already bought another car. It’s a gooder car. It has no radio, so I will just sing the Soviet national anthem to myself instead of listening to degenerate pop music that’s designed to accelerate the vicious cycle of consumerism and capitalism.

Nah, unless you’re really hurting for it, I’ll take money in hand. You were probably never going to hear from the $2200 guy again. Seen it tons of times. They’ll always have the money “soon.”

The people that say they’ll contact you later hardly ever follow through. I let one too many deals fall through because I told someone(s) that I’m waiting on the first guy in line.

Money talks. Bullshit walks. That whole thing.

Wow. Even at $2200, that seems like a steal.

Haha, I just did a similar thing;

Selling the spotless canopy off my old Tacoma to by a canopy for the new one. New they are all around $1800 - listed ours for $1000 for a quick sale because I’m ordering the new one asap. First guy who showed up was a young guy super excited to find a cap that matched his truck - a DCLB twin to my old one. He’s planning to camp at the ski hill and get first tracks before anyone else..

Offers me $800, ...I counter with $850. Deal is made.

I’m happy because it’s off the front lawn, plus it’s going to someone excited about it. He’s happy because he got the deal of the year. My wife thinks I’m hilarious because I gave it away - also ‘When you are asking 1000, they offer 800 - you meet at 900!’ lol

I’m good with karma.

You might be right. To be fair, he said the car was for his nephew and he wanted to bring the nephew to see it, but who knows.

There’s something to be said for cash being waved in your face. That said, if somebody offers $1700 you’d at least say you’ve got an offer at $2200 but you’ll do $2000 now.

I had a 1990 Cougar back in 2005ish and can confirm this can happen. Oddly low miles, old couple, garage kept. I never wanted to brag, but sometimes someone would sit in it and say it themselves.
