Received a completely unsolicited, out-of-the-blue job offer to be general counsel of one of my clients. Would be a slight pay cut in terms of cash comp, total comp probably about the same over the next five years with options vesting, and there’s the potential for the equity to appreciate. Much thinking to do.

On the car front, I didn’t realize that the Karma Reveros actually were for sale at this point. Pretty sure I saw one today, but I was stopped at a light and despite my best efforts, could not catch up due to traffic.

Kudos to you. I am a teacher and nobody is ever going to offer me a promotion, nor a raise, nor anything of the sort. If you’re a teacher, you better like your job because it’s a dead end career.

How long can you spend deciding?

I don’t know what kind of practice area or firm environment you’re coming from, but I have to think the culture of the client and potential quality of life considerations might weigh heavily here, or at least they would for me. Especially if escaping the tyranny of the billable hour was on the table.

I’m a trial lawyer, so GC gigs usually go to the corporate/transactional lawyers. I enjoy my firm and actually enjoy trying cases, but opportunities like this don’t present themselves to litigators very often.

They want to know in 10 days, but it’s a client and they’ve already told me there’s no one else on their radar screen. I think they’ll give me a while before they make me decide.

The question I’d have for you is about the scope of the work. Would your scope of experience be narrowed and any less interesting than what you do now? If so, perhaps that would be a good thing because maybe it would free you up to shop for cars or come home and enjoy your family more.

Very true (I too am a litigator).

It actually would be broader. I’d be overseeing everything, so real estate, franchise agreements, labor & employment. Plus I’d be somewhat involved on the business side.
