Kinja'd!!!

So for my next car I’m getting a GPS tracker for it. This model also has a kill switch that can be remotely activated. The company says it goes on the starter system. But since my car’s a manual it could just be push started (By the time I used the kill switch it would already be stolen.) So my question is, would it be legal to put the killswitch on the ignition or fuel system? I’m assuming there would be some legal quandary about let’s say, I kill the car will they’re driving and they rear end someone. Could I be held at fault for that since I killed the car? Or is it all on them since they stole it?

Also hit me with recommendations for aftermarket car alarms.

I can’t say I actually know anything in regard to the legality of killing the car while it’s being driven, but the brakes and steering will still work so I wouldn’t consider it that dangerous.

To the common sense side of things, you should never be at fault when someone else does something illegal after stealing or breaking into your home, but yet we see time and time again homeowners on the fault for the intruder hurting themselves in the house or getting hurt by the owners. So I would say it probably depends on what state and county and city you live in depending on their laws.

If you are really worried about your car being stolen I would suggest both that alarm system and a real battery cutoff switch hidden under the dash and you just take the key with you. Bam no ignition, not go.

I have no constructive advice to give, other than that you should definitely install a 70s era alarm for that air raid siren sound we all can enjoy. Headphone users beware.

fuel pump - my old hidden kill switch was that way. If you switched it while driving (by accident a few times!)you had about a minute of shudder while the engine used up the fuel pressure then it stopped.. still had a few brake pumps and most of the power steering to get stopped safely.

I was under the impression that immobilizers cut fuel supply?

Simple solution, do NOT tell the police or anyone else that you remotely killed the car. That way as far as they can tell, the car accident was caused by the person who stole it.

Unfortunately, that sounds a bit too much like boobytrapping. I think you’d be better off installing a kill switch that won’t let them start it in the first place. Disable the fuel or ignition, and they won’t even be able to push-start it.

Depends on the immobilizer and how it’s wired up. You can kill any circuit you want, it just depends on what sort of challenge you want to present to potential thieves.

I believe LoJack and OnStar have this ability as well. You can probably pull up their legal documents or just ask them (pretending to be a customer) and see how they get around it. I imagine if it something you do in coordination with police, you’d be fine. But yeah, go rogue and shut it down without police actively involved and the thief or their family could sue. Because ‘merica.

As others have said, I’d stick with having it kill the fuel upon initial alarm activation.

Although I’m sure it would work. I don’t really want to lie to the police when I’m not on the hook for anything.

The difference is that this would kill it potentially while they were driving it. Immobilizers cut fuel supply so that the vehicle can’t even start.

I can’t see why it wouldn’t be any different to the police using a bait car?

Really, you wouldn’t be lying unless they asked you specifically if you immobilized the car, or something very specific about the accident.

Seems like the latter is a safer choice then.

Though I still think we live in a screwed up world where we have to care about the well-being of thieves.

I didn’t even think about adding an immobilizer. I might do that instead, because a gps tracker would have a monthly fee for service.
