Tell me about the 318ti. Primarily their reliability and how hard/easy they are to work on. And gas mileage.

Because BMW hatchback sounds awesome.

I had a 1998 318i sedan and it was a piece of shit. Mine was the very first run of E46s so maybe the E36s are better but I don’t know. I had cooling problems, suspension issues, and it ate oil.

They were available with a huge canvas sunroof “California roof”, which is fucking awesome. If you can find one with a manual and the canvas roof, buy it!

Despite it being a E36, the rear suspension is from the E30. It’s an 90s German car, expect some electrical gremlins.

I was 18 in a foreign country with limited resources. Now I know I could probably have taken better care of it but, I still wouldn’t want to. Her name was Helen and she didn’t stick around long.

It will be hard to find one that wasn’t treated like shit. Interior bits are not the best quality. If it was left in the sun: hoo boy. Owners might also “know what they have.” Best one I ever found was asking 5 grand, pushing 150k miles. Couldn’t do it. Cute as shit, though.

I had a ‘95 318ti for a very short period of time. It had lived a life of neglect before I got it, so it had issues. Nonetheless, it ran great, drove nicely, was pretty comfy, and got fantastic gas mileage. I didn’t own it long enough to really say much about reliability.

I loved my E36 but they aren’t without their issues. Mine never stranded me but I also put about $2000 worth of work into it. Just make sure it was taken decent care of and it’ll be mostly fine. They are decently easy to work on though so they have that going for them.

I talked to the guy who owned it. Apparently the previous owner was an old guy, so I’m assuming he took decent care of it. I didn’t ask how long the current guy had it. I couldn’t care less about the interior.

It’s also only $1,600 so not a bad price. I just don’t wanna be stuck with Audi like repair nonsense.

E36s are generally solid, fairly straightforward to work on, and reasonably cheap to maintain. The 318ti also shares its rear suspension with the E30 and the Z3, I believe, so it’s even simpler there. I’ve never heard of any particular problems with the 1.8, and know two people who owned 318tis and loved them. The only issue I know of is that the California tops (which are awesome) sometimes leak.

I’ve had good luck dealing with electrical problems. As long as the drive train is stout I think I’ll give this a look.

I had a 2000 323i sedan and it was awesome ! Or rather... worth the trouble haha

I would totally approve of a dirt-cheap 318ti.

RWD but slower than a base Civic. Pass.

I had a 316 e36 compact and the thing was very tough. It had lived a hard life and I thrashed it. Never let me down. Easy enough to work on but keep an eye out for rust, especially around the jacking pads.

Well, put politely if your budget is that low you probably should not buy this nor an Audi at in price bracket.

It’s not so much that I don’t have the money, but I’m just cheap. I’ll definitely do a lot more research on their reliability and maintenance than this.

I’d much rather get a 3800-powered GM V6. FWD/auto but it’s at least fast in a straight line. And equally dirt cheap.

$cheap + BMW usually ends in tears anyway.

I dunno i think you could find an E36 with 6-cylinders and less archaic rear suspension for equal or slightly more money. Those things were slow as balls. The rear suspension is also a big deal to me, despite E30 suspension being not really ultimate that bad. Just the very fact that they were going that deep into cost cutting measures really rubs me the wrong way.

I mean no remarks on your personal finances, just replying to what you’re willing to pay for but one purchase. I am also cheap.

It was designed to be a cheap, entry-level-luxury German car - like the Mercedes C230, IIRC - and last the warranty period or until the owner traded up to one of the “real” models. There’s better options out there for the money that are more rewarding to own and drive

Quicker than mine before I swapped my civic. 140 HP vs 125ish. I’ve owned both at the same time

I’ve owned an 318I. It was quicker than my civic and it was all full of problems, it was solid, yet it needed a lot of work. That being said I’d buy another e36.

I turned down a manual 318I sedan in favor of a an auto vr6 97 jetta 12 years ago (cause torque!). The jetta never ran right. The granny started slipping at 100k and I went upside down $3000 trading it in.

Ragrets.

I think they’re more e30 than e36. As an e30 owner, parts are cheap and working on it is very easy

They make great engine swap candidates since the front 1/3 is identical to the rest of the E36s. I’m biased because my late grandpa owned one.
