Are my ideas getting better or worse?

Kinja'd!!!

Pros-

302 swapped Fairmount that runs and drives fine.

Cons-

Gas mileage, could forget about doing Uber eats and what not

Needs new clutch and transmission, but the guy will through those in as well. I’m 90% sure I could do that in a weekend.

Brakes are sketchy. Not a huge problem, but if I bought it I’d have to drive it back to my apartment.

I was actually suppose to see the Mazada 6 today. But I was actually messaging the guy with this car and ended up seeing that. Still haven’t heard back from the actual Mazada 6 guy.

Tomorrow morning I’m getting the leakdown test done on the Galant. If it passes I’m 99% decided on that. Although idk if it’ll pass.

Considering this is very nearly a Fox Mustang in disguise, this is pretty rad in a stupid way.

It’s got that “I wear your granddad’s clothes” je ne sais quoi.

What RamblinRover said. But it sure sounds like it needs a hell of a lot of work to be drivable. Clutch, trans, brakes - the 302 better be very solid, it’s the only thing you’re not replacing it seems.

Brakes is probably just a MC, since pressure builds up as you drive it. Trans and clutch aren’t the biggest deal since he’s including the parts and I could knock them out in a weekend.

The real killer for me is the gas mileage since I was planning on doing Uber eats or door dash before the Integra got stolen.

As somebody who took driver’s ed in a Fairmont and also had a high school friend that had one, I say you are definitely getting worse.

Manual 302 Fairmont? At least go look at it.

That does make up for a lot of sins but Fairmonts have a lot of sins to make up for. Then again if they’re good enough for Bob Glidden they’re good enough for anybody!

I did. That’s how I know the brakes suck and the clutch is bad.

glad you went and looked at it, i was severely tempted to go and have a look.

its a nothing special 302, but that manual, sure would be fun...... the fact that the brakes build up pressure suggests that it might have some pinhole leak in the system somewhere. usually its near the wheel cylinders.

the price was downright fair too, at $2k..... it just needs a lot of “minor” work....... that clutch, and the throwout while you are there, and the MC, and whatever else is leaking in the system, probably a wheel cylinder. nothing too expensive, just time consuming

That’s a nice beetle, but I don’t think I’d want to daily one. Plus 2.5K is kind of the end of my budget.

If you want an old Ford with a 302, I’ve got a Town Car available.

i can understand that.... beetles are not everyones idea of fun. this one used to (if i am not mistaken) belong to old man jim heidelberg, out in my part of the world. he owned a small grocery store. it usually sat under a car port. it would get driven every so often. it finally got sold by the family about a year ago when he finally died...... it would be a fun runner.......

yeah i know that it is getting out past the budget, but....... if you can find some budget to spring for something a little nicer, it might be worth it......

I think I found the car I’m gonna get. It’s pretty far under budget, but it should get me around for a few years and then I can get another car.

The only problem is I’m pretty sure the wheels aren’t backspaced properly and 5th gear doesn’t work. I didn’t get a chance to drive it that fast, but hopefully it’ll go in if I time it right. Even then, IME 5th in Hondas usually just drops the RPM 500. So loosing it shouldn’t be that big of a deal.
