IT’S BROCK-VEMBER! CATCH THE MEH-XCITEMENT!

Ugh. I forgot the Broncos are playing an early game. I hate that. It throws off my whole day. Plus, they’re starting a backup QB against a team with the best record in the league. Whee. Actually, I think they have about a 50-50 shot against the Eagles today. This is a total trap game for them, more than the Giants were a trap game for the Broncos. No one in their right mind expects the Broncos to win, on paper. I think the Broncos’ D matches up well against Carson Wentz though. When they bring QB pressure they are relentless, and Wentz keeps plays alive as long as possible. This whole season has been ridiculous, so why wouldn’t a downtrodden Broncos team upset Philly in Philly? Eagles probably win, but I wouldn’t bet actual money on it.

This Onion headline made me laugh:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I’m really bummed about Deshaun Watson’s injury (though not as much as Texans fans must be). That game the Texans played against the Seahawks last week was fantastic. I hope his rehab and healing is quick, because we need more good QB play in this league for sure.

Let’s see what we get to watch in my neck of the woods today: on CBS after the Broncos play, we get the Chiefs at Cowboys. I loathe cheering for the Cowboys but I will today. I think they take it. Over on FOX they usually don’t show a game when the Broncos are playing, so we just get the afternoon game with the Redskins at the Seahawks. My brain usually says to take the Seahawks at home, but I don’t know that they’ll be all that dominant today. Sunday night we’ll have the Raiders at the Dolphins. Go Fins. Monday Night Football will be the Lions at the Packers. I think it’s a good setup for the Lions to win one at Lambeau, which is usually rare.

For the rest, I’m thinking the Jags will beat the Bengals at home, Saints beat the Bucs, Texans win against the Colts, Falcons beat Panthers, Rams probably beat the Giants, Titans over Ravens, Cards over Niners. I don’t know why I bother to try to predict any of these games, I’m clearly terrible at it.

What games are you watching this week?

Eagles all the way. It’s my first season in a few years that I’ve been able to watch almost every game and I came back to a team that’s looking good. But, they are still the Eagles and anything could happen.

This year I’ve been semi-avoiding football, because I’ve always paid zero attention to college football and the NFL just doesn’t excite me all that much, plus it’s a never-ending controversy magnet. I’m definitely not a “HURR DURR THOSE PLAYERS SHOULD STICK TO SPORTS THEY’RE DISRESPECTING THE FLAG THE TROOPS AND MURRICA” type.

But between the CTE, the constant misunderstanding by the HURR DURRS of the nature of the protests, legal battles over Ezekiel Elliott maybe or maybe not beating up his girlfriend, and my having grown up in DC where the local team and its giant asshole owner irrationally cling to a racist name when the local basketball team decided in the 90s to let the fans rename the Bullets to the stupid-ass Wizards, and my extremely low tolerance for mass commercial watching thanks to a diet of mostly streaming, it just doesn’t interest me much anymore.

I live in Wisconsin and I actually piggybacked on a friend with DirecTV’s Sunday Ticket for a few years so I could watch the Skins. I paid him the $90 Sunday Ticket Max upcharge and he gave me his login info to use the streaming. But I haven’t done that in a couple years because come on, why should anyone force themselves to watch the damn Skins every week? I’ll watch if and when they’re on local TV here.

My wife is sorta attached to the Packers but that’s less because of any interest in football on her part and more because her late father was a huge Packer fan. Not sure why she would still want to watch them being led by Brett Hundley but this year she’s been all about putting the games on, more than in the past where she’d usually just get amped for playoff games. Probably a nostalgia thing.

Oh, and even though the Packers play on Monday this week, our local Fox station is only showing one Sunday game because of whatever stupid blackout rules and therefore the Skins game isn’t on.

Like I said, I think there’s a good chance the Broncos upset them today. But I’ve been impressed with the Eagles so far. I’m jealous of teams that have a stable QB.

I won’t be able to watch today, but I fully expect my titans to screw up and not take this now extra wide open division.

Maybe the protests have had a bit of impact, but I think there’s a bunch of crap causing the ratings to dip. I know I’m probably the only one who thinks this, but they made a huge mistake closing NFL Europe. They were never going to make money, but it was effective at developing QBs and offensive linemen. That has caused quality of play to go down, and there’s a dearth of quarterbacks and OL now.

NFL Europe is an interesting point. I think given a bit more time it could’ve increased the international talent pool. Getting more european kids into the sport would only help increase the chances of landing on rare talent. That on top of the development opportunities it presented.

I heard on the radio a few minutes ago that Watson is expected to take 8-9 months to recover. It sucks. He was a shoe-in for RoTY!

Let’s see if Savage can live up to his name (doubtful).

And congrats on finally winning Osweiller!!

I don’t trust the Ravens though. They may have crushed the Dolphins but Joe Flacco hasn’t looked good.

Beyond happy with getting Duane Brown. I could see this being the turning point for the Hawks (weird to say that about a 5-2 team going off a 4 win streak) and I think the Redskins are going to be severely outmatched, especially looking at their injured list. That said.... It always makes me nervous when Seattle isn’t seen as the underdog. Fingers crossed

Watson’s injury is heartbreaking, I’d like to think they can keep up the same level of play from last week without him leading, but... I don’t see it. I’m thinking Colts take this one.

Rams over Giants, Eagles over broncos. I’d be thrilled to be proven wrong about either of those.

They need to bring it back, even if they keep it just to Germany to save costs. Fans showed up pretty regularly to the games there. They have to stop thinking of it as a profit center and more of a long term investment. It was a good testing ground for new rules, too.

The only reason this might work is that we have the beginnings of a decent run game forming. They need to pick one back and stick with him, though. This constantly alternating the backs is keeping them from getting in rhythm. If Mike McCoy sticks with the run and keeps Brock’s attempts in the 20-25 range, I’d say they can make some things happen.

They should. I’m still surprised about the Ajayi trade. Actually, I’m surprised about all the trades that happened. It’s weird to see that happen in the NFL. I’d like to see it happen more often.

There’s a lot of overlap between the NFL fan demographic and the “anything with the faintest whiff of un-patriotic-ness DISRESPECTS THE TROOPS” Fox News demographic.

My wife’s aunt who is super Fox Newsy has renounced her Packers fandom over the anthem stuff. We’ll see how long it lasts.

Personally I think the Fox Newsers have successfully changed the conversation on the protests from “we’re doing this to draw attention to racial inequality,” to “YOU ARE DISRESPECTING THE FLAG (and oh btw racial inequality doesn’t exist anymore, this is a post-racial society, you bunch of ungrateful millionaire n******, get back to entertaining me) ”

The players, if they were politically savvier, would, instead of persisting with the kneeling, find some other way to draw attention to their cause. Like Bradley Beal on the Wizards, every time a reporter shoves a microphone in his face, he starts with “First off I want to thank my lord and savior Jesus Christ. Yeah I was shooting the ball really well tonight until Draymond Green decided to wrestle with me.”

So those NFL players could say something about racial inequality every single time someone puts a microphone in their face, and not kneel, and then the Fox Newsers couldn’t accuse them of disrespecting the flag because they’re just hijacking a post-game interview.

But that’s just one of many reasons I’m tuning out. I just don’t care about it that much and there are too many things about it that I don’t want to devote my mental energy to.

Agreed, if it increases quality of play it’s worth it. On another note sky sports (main sports network here in the UK) has rob ryan doing colour commentary. Sadly he seems to be on his best behaviour.

That’s a sign of a good team, when they beat the teams they’re supposed to and beat them big. They might be on their way.

The Broncos are putrid. Last 4 weeks they’ve looked like a JV team. If this keeps up I doubt the coaching team will survive, and they might clean house further. I doubt the QB of their future is on the roster, though I don’t really think you can pin this loss on Brock too much when the defense gives up 51 points.
