Kinja'd!!!

I’m planning on picking up a bottle of Scotch for my birthday in a few weeks, and was wondering if Oppo had any recommendations. I’m a big fan of Bowmore Scotches, but I’ve also been eyeing some Jonnie Walker Green Label. I’m not much of a drinker, so the bottle will probably last me a year or two, and I’m willing to spend up to $100 CAD if it’s really good stuff. Any recommendations?

I’m not familiar with Bowmore scotches, but my go to is Glenlivet’s Nadurra Oloroso Matured. It’s cask strength (around 90-100 proof vs. 80) so it comes on strong, but has an amazing, complex flavor that I find very satisfying.

As a wildcard, I’d suggest Nikka Yoichi. It’s not technically a scotch since it’s not from Scotland - it’s Japanese whisky. The story is very interesting behind it, but basically the first whisky distillers in Japan studied their craft in Scotland, so Japanese whisky has a very smokey, peaty taste. I brought a bottle back from Japan (though you should be able to find it locally), and all my Scotch snob friends adore it.

Oooh Glenlivet. My buddy loves the stuff. I’ll be sure to consider it.

Can’t seem to see if the store is it stocked, but I’ll keep an eye out for it.

don’t let the weird bottle put you off, this is one of the smoothest whisky’s I’ve ever had. If you don’t want peat then go with that.

If you want peat then my go to are Ardbeg 10 or Lagavulin 16

I’m a partial to Balvanie and Mccallen, but I have really inconsistant tastes in scotch.

If it’s available in Canada pick up Yamazaki. Fantastic Japanese scotch. Probably the best twelve year I have ever had.

I get my father a bottle of it every year for his birthday. Half because it’s his favorite and half because he’ll only drink it when I’m there to enjoy with him.

Bowmore, eh? Warm greetings, fellow Islay scotch drinker!

Scotch generally has similar characteristics by region. If you want your scotch to taste like biting into a burning chunk of peat (possibly my favorite smell in the world), then Islays are for you. Laphroaig 10 is my favorite scotch. It is usually around $50 in ‘merica money, so I don’t know what that is in monopoly Candian dollars. Around here it won’t be sold in the corner liqour store, but any finer retailer of the nectar of the goods should have it.

I’ve certainly had more expensive scotches, but I haven’t yet found one I like better.

I know this isn’t scotch but I like it. Suntory Hibiki.

It’s a little smokey and woody, but it’s not overly so. And it is incredibly smooth. Perfect for sipping.

Following this thread because I’m sick of drinking the bitter piss that is beer.

I’ve been tossing around the idea of getting a bottle of Johnnie Walker myself, my grandma used to love it. But if there’s something better worth the money then I’ll gladly get it.

Depends on the type of Jonnie Walker. And also what you like in a Scotch.

Really, it’d be great if you could just buy a Scotch mixer, with a bunch of smaller bottles in a pack. I don’t drink enough of it to justify a big bottle, but I also want to try different things.

Last year at Thanksgiving my brother-in-law left a bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue at my house. It was one of those gift-box bottles from Costco. I know nothing about Scotch, I drink bourbon or beer, but I can say that was excellent Scotch.

As much as I’d live to try some, $300 a bottle is a little rich for my tastes.

The new version of the Green Label post-2008 seems to have soften a lot on the smoky side (which is the main character of Islays like the Bowmore). Probably to make room for the duty free only Island Green.

I would try a Laphroaig Quarter Cask, then step up to the Ardbeg 10 if smoky is your thing.

Balvenie 12 year double wood is a great place to start if you’re not a big drinker. If you want to get in to the smoky end try Ardbeg 10year. But some of my favorites are from Oban, the 14 year and Distillers select specifically. Went on their tour in Scotland and it was lovely.

Something Bowmore like? Any Islay except Bruichladdich. Despite what the labels say, they aren’t heavily peated. Careful with Coal Ila too. Unpeated versions are becoming the norm.

It won’t be a Bowmore experience, but Green Label is an excellent choice. The 4 single malts in it (with no grains to interfere) are listed on the bottle. With the exception of Linkwood (rare) you should be able to go to a good bar, try one of the 4, then go home and try and find the flavor in your Green label. Good times. :-)x
