Kinja'd!!!

When we last left off, it had a few things replaced on the what should have been a 3.5 hour drive home which turned into an overnight stay.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Has it gotten better? Yes, and no. The trans issue turned out to be the trans itself, so now it has a new 4L85E. While in there the rear main was replaced along with an axle seal in the back. All was well. It made it’s first camper pulling journey without breaking a sweat, managing a massive 7 mpg.

After that, things have went down hill. The new rear main is spraying oil(it’s warrantied, so that’s good), the radiator is blown and patched, and the rear end is seeping. That said, it has 230k miles, and most of these things are just age related. It’s done it’s job so far, and the 8.1 pulls our 8k lbs camper with ease.

I’ve always wondered about the ownership experience of one of these big-block ‘Burbans. Thanks for the updates.

That sounds about right for 8.1 fuel mileage.

That was with 8k behind it. Unloaded my Dad gets like 11, 14 if it’s all highway.

His V6 Ram got like 17, so it doesn’t hurt that bad.

It’s actually pretty nice to drive. It’s quite comfortable and is a lot easier to maneuver than the size suggests. My 17 year old sister prefers driving it over my Mom’s Azera due to the extra visibility and driving feel.

I used to have a 2001 GMC 3500, crew cab/dually/4x4 with the 8.1L. That truck got 10 unloaded on the highway and 4-6 towing, depending on how much weight was behind it and what the frontal area of the trailer was like. Your mileage sounds about right for a lighter truck. The Allison tranny was the best part of that truck, otherwise I don’t miss it much. The 8.1l did make very nice noises. I was lucky enough to sell it right before gas hit $1.75/gallon for the first time and those trucks still had some value. Had I kept it another 6 months I probably would’ve gotten at least 25% less for it.

At 230k I’d expect issues. A trans? Ouch!

That’s still a helluva rig for $4k.

It was $5k, but the dealer took $900 off for the trans. So we did alright. It needs some interior work(radio and crushed drivers seat), but overall it’s in good condition.

But 200k is about the lifespan of a 4L85, and 75-150k for the 60 depending on the weight it’s pushing around.

In a world in which money was less of an issue, a 6 speed 5.9 Cummins would be in it’s space, but for $4100, it’s hard to do better.

I was blown away by the turning circle of mine when I got it. Though the last one I owned was a 1975 so I suppose some improvement should have been expected.

I haven’t read back on this rig yet. Do you know the dealer? Those are still in the $8,000-$15,000 range out here.

The 60/65 in my 1500 was replaced at 80k. I’m already searching for a rebuildable core.

That is true. I looked at a couple of HO 5.9 Cummins in the mid 00's when you could buy them for around 15k~ish with 50-75k on the clock. I miss the slightly used diesel truck market of back before everyone and their mother wanted one. I wish I would’ve picked one up, because it would still be running today and probably still be worth more money then they were selling for back then.

I don’t remember the dealer, it had been sitting on the lot for a while, so the price had been lowered a few times. It looked weathered when we got it, but new headlights and a bath, and the exterior is near mint.

This one’s turning circle isn’t bad, though it isn’t great either, but it may be the difference between a 1500 and 2500.

Kinja'd!!!

The 8.1 is pretty addictive. 4.10's to boot. This 235,000 mile truck hauls ass. Word is she’s getting surplussed soon, hoping to get my hands on it if I can.

This has the 4.10, and it scoots.

That big block is pretty addictive. Throw a skidsteer behind it and it barely notices.

This confirms it. Should have gotten the 8.1. My 6.0 gets 12.5 if I baby it, and 10 dragging the travel trailer over the mountains with my foot slammed to the floor the entire way. The towing mileage is great, but everywhere else it gets about the same as a big block, just without all that pesky torque.

How’s the interior? That’s a huge selling point for me.

Actually, a 496 would have been enough to sell me on that truck.

The previous owner literally crushed the driver’s seat and the radio sucks, but other than that, everything down to the seat heaters and sunroof work.

To be fair, the highway mileage is at 55. It turns fairly high at 70 with the 4.10.
