Did I blow it, Oppo?

The laptop market is excruciating. I got great feedback from Opponauts, and I remained as confused as ever. My last 2 have been MacBook Pros, but that shit is O-U-T out:

There has never been a laptop worth $2800, and there has never been a phone worth $1000. This is the final blow for Apple with me.

So I bought a Lenovo Yoga 920. i7, 512 GB SSD hard drive, seems to be comparable in specs, for a lot less money.

What’s the verdict, Oppo? Did I come out ok? I am an idiot when it comes to these things, which is probably why I have had Macs for so long.

I have former students that use similar Lenovo’s for college, they seem to like them.

I’m still using the 2011 base iMac my parents got me for university. ¯\_()_/¯

I agree though. Refurbished that was a desktop for CAD$1050. Sure, it was a few years ago. But still. I’ve done CAD modelling with it and it keeps going.

I think you probably came out fine. I own a mac for personal use. It’s a 2012 non-retina model that I just upgraded with a 1tb ssd. I plan on using it for as long as I can. The new models are so expensive that I might not be buying another one when my current laptop dies. I’ll probably get a pc eventually. I have heard good things about Lenovo especially their keyboards.

I think you probably are good. We have a few older Yogas floating around at work, and they seem like nice machines.

Have heard very good things about the yoga and that seems to me the best hinge in the convertible market. Also I think it’s very popular in the business segment that needs to use it for presentations. The only thing I don’t like is that there are no gaps above the left and right keys, but that seems to be the norm these days.

You did alright, the Yogas pack a lot of value for the money. I almost bought one in college, but the ThinkPad had a better display and keyboard.

The House that Steve Built has never been shy about charging big bucks but it’s never indicative of quality. My friend and I both got laptops for college - him a MacBook and me a Thinkpad T400. His laptop was on its last legs by senior year while mine still runs like a top.

Its replacement is pretty worn out but that’s more to do with me running it at its limits near-24/7 for three straight years.

And here I was trying to help you find something with a damn optical drive and VGA port.

I’m a I.T. Guy so naturally i’m way more Microsoft than Apple.

That looks like a sweet notebook. I really, really like that hinge.

Can you make a laptop Hackintosh? Does such a thing exist? Might be the solution.

I’m assuming it has HDMI out, it might be worth picking up a dongle to go from HDMI to VGA like this one. My school laptop is HDMI out and the projector in my classroom is ancient so I use one like this daily.

The only Apple lap top I ever bought was a used Pro for my wife so she could do photo work. No way was I going to pay the new prices they were asking and I still thought it was stupid paying new laptop money for a used one. That laptop is now over a decade old and the best working computer we own. I’ve seen at least three PC laptops die in the time we’ve owned it, and I’ve dropped this thing at least twenty times. I’m by no means an “Apple guy”, but holy shit did they built a quality machine. It’s one of the few electronic devicesI might actually be able to pass along to my kids.

The problem with these things is they change up how they build them, so you have no idea whether the new ones are made as well as the old ones.

I would say you’ve made a good decision. My Core i7 desktop is Windows 10, but my HP Pavilion TouchSmart 14 laptop is running Linux Mint 18.2 MATE.

Long story short, I have no idea why people pay the crazy prices for Apple when you get a comparable PC for WAY cheaper. Hell, you can do that and if you don’t like Windows, you can go Linux or Hackintosh and still save yourself a ton of cash.

Well, look at it this way, you can by another one in a few years, and with inflation it will be like you bought two computers for the price of the Apple.

I got a lenovo laptop for my business. Great price for the specs no doubt. But it was PACKED with pre-installed ad ware and spy ware.
Either go through it with spyware scanner a bunch of times or maybe do a clean os install before moving into it...
