Kinja'd!!!

As a follow-up to my last post, i may have found a car that fits my needs: the 1G SRX comes in rwd/awd, seats 7, and can be found under $10k with less than 100k miles. Total grandpa car, but it’s also a long-roof CTS. Apparently there is a higher-than-average chance of mortality in event of a crash, but I don’t plan on crashing so I should be fine! YOLO, right?

What’s the collective understanding of the SRX? Anyone with experience in our of these?

They were sold with a Northstar V8 for few years.

So...rwd architecture and atrocious safety ratings = 2012 or newer requirement goes out the window? Got it.

I’m spit-balling, dude. Nothing is decided until I have keys in-hand. The parameters I put out the other day would be ideal, but as was pointed out, not terribly practical.

I’m asking for opinions, not validation.

Buddy of mine had one for 4 years or so. Bought it new. Seems to me that he had lots of issues with it, but I don’t recall any details, except that it would randomly refuse to start when it got older. And it was very rattly. Seemed like a great idea, poorly executed.

The more I read up on them, the more I hear that the panoramic sunroof was a huge compromise to the structure.

I think you’re taking my comment more negatively than intended. Just trying to make a joke.

I HATE these things. HATE them. I had to put a motor in one and it was just the biggest pain in the ass I’ve ever encountered. These used what was basically version 1 of the 3.6L V6 which is more or less garbage.

Sorry, man, I’m just tired of trying to work with so little wiggle room. I need a new daily driver, it has to do everything, and I’m just afraid of getting stuck with something that seemed great and then doesn’t work out. I’ve been at this for a few months now, and just feeling the pressure.

While shopping for our most recent vehicle I quite often saw the V8 SRX directly compared with the Infiniti FX45 and Porsche Cayenne S.

From what I recall, the V8 SRX was quick in a straight line and that was pretty much it’s only redeeming quality when compared with the others. Handling, braking, etc, lacked both in “feel” and actual performance, with mediocre results overall. In the long run, questionable materials, build quality, and overall engineering would be of serious concern to me.

Fwiw, my elderly neighbors across the street have one and have complained to me about it’s leaky headlight housings. I looked into it, and it’s apparently a widespread issue which GM refuses to address, instead choosing to sell obscenely overpriced replacement units which are also defective and will fail again in time. I think they quoted my neighbor something like 4 grand to replace them. Even opening up the housings to try and dry them out (or replace a bulb, for that matter) requires pulling the bumper, front facia, and headlight housings because you can’t access them from the rear without pulling both the intake airbox as well as a fuse box, and even then it would require significant skin and blood sacrifice to the car gods to do... And that’s only if you have halogens. Xenon’s are impossible to do from the rear, and it just so happens my neighbors car is equipped with xenons. In the end, I’m going to have to decline helping them because the risk of me scratching the paint, snapping some expensive bit of plastic, wire, etc is just too great. Now if it were my own vehicle I would likely tackle it without giving it a second thought, but I would resent the hell out of the engineers who designed it as I spent a couple of days dealing with it.

Also, the rear end of the SRX is a heinous anus.

So I personally wouldn’t buy one.

As for the SRX’s competition, the Porsche brakes the best in both feel and based on raw data. It will also break your wallet without a warranty. I’m a bottom of the depreciation curve kinda guy, so I had to nope the Porsche too. Way too many common/guaranteed /extremely-expensive failure points.

I went FX45. The 03 is faster than the Porsche, brakes and handles better than the Caddy, looks better than both other 1st gens, with sensible Japanese engineering. They softened the ride in 04+ to appease the critics and made it slightly worse handling based on the numbers, but still a solid choice imho if you happen upon one. Opt for one with the tech package if at all possible. Also, plan to replace the door actuators with aftermarket units because the OE ones are guaranteed to fail and are on the pricey side. Cheaply and easily remedied, but nissan are dicks for not addressing this and equipping a decades plus worth of vehicles with actuators that are guaranteed to fail, repeatedly.
