Kinja'd!!!

So since I sold my E46 M3 I have been putting lots of miles on my leased Silverado, which has left me in a bit of a pickle but I think the best course of action is to buy a cheap car and DD that through the summer. I have also wanted to improve my driving through competition and autocross has always caught my eye. Which leads me to the car you see above, the Acura RSX, I know it’d make a reasonably fun commuter and can be bought for just a few thousand dollars. But, would it make for a good beginner autox car? Need Oppo’s wisdom on this.

Mustang! New Edge GTs are pretty cheap.

Didn’t really think of those but that is a very good idea too.

Obviously an NA/NB Miata is the answer.

But other cars I’d pick would be any of the E36, E28, E34. With enough looking they can be had for “a few thousand dollars.”

Or the holy grail- some old lady’s EK gen Civic!

I think they are in this really great spot in the market. Bottomed out depreciation wise, too many out there to really command a premium, but for the price of a beat up civic or older integra you can get an RSX with really nice seats and the K series engine. Quite a bit heavier then a civic or integra, but the K-series engine takes so much abuse.

The type-s would be sweet if you can find one unabused. Just do your do diligence in checking the transmission. If you plan on being a bit aggressive with it some poly mount inserts may be helpful, the full poly mounts are awesome for launching, but vibrates like no other at idle.

They do have a very irritating smell of mold that is ever present. Something to do with the sunroof or hatch seal, along with the combination of a fungus in the air condition matrix. Pretty standard in a lot of cars according to some, but I noticed it a lot on my RSX.

I would do a good set of springs and struts over coilovers and keep the exhaust stock for your DD sanity. A set of thicker front sway bars and a much thicker rear sway bar will really change the car from its understeer happy characteristic and tighten up the steering feel.

Relatively bullet-proof, tons of aftermarket support. Just be sure to get an aftermarket seat the stock ones are terrible for autocross.

Depends on your commute though, as it isn’t the most soundproof car.

I’ve been down the BMW rabbit hole and the only way I’m going back is for another E46 M3. And that’s only if R32 GTR prices skyrocket or said GTR has been acquired and I have the garage space + cash to buy one.

Contrary to popular belief FWD can be fun and I’ve always wanted a DC5 RSX.

I think a GTS-T would be great then, except for the four seats.

Five Rows is tough.... you can get an old Volvo wagon with the rear-facing third row, then put a huge V8 in it like Paul Newman did!

I highly support this. An SN95 GT is on my short list of “next to buy”

Agreed. But... I still think rwd sits on the throne in the “fun kingdom”

An RSX would be wonderful. Or a stock early 90's civic hatch as a platform to build off of (assuming they still exist in stock form).

Here’s another one that’s fairly under the Rader. Nissan sentra Se-r (preferably spec V). They’re dirt cheap, have a limited slip diff, 6-speed manual and good power/chassis for the time

Given the username, I think the best course of action is to proceed blinders on towards the GTR! How far away are you realistically? Places like lightstream etc. can provide a small loan if that bridges the gap.

Probably two years, but I could probably afford a GTR in about a year if that was my only goal but I want my own garage for it so if I save for two years I can buy the GTR cash and put a big down payment on a house or condo. Luckily, I can afford to spend a few thousand on a clean RSX to keep me from going way over miles on the lease plus have a relatively fun car to whip around.
