So part of this job I’ve been working for more than a month now requires me to go on dealership lots and locate cars that need photos for advertising. Sometimes, I get to drive some very interesting things.

How many people can say they’ve driven a Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat, and a Pontiac G8 6.0 in the same day?

That’s an interesting job. If you don’t mind me asking, how’d you get into the job, previous photography related job?

As cool as the Hellcat is, it’s the Australian-American that interests me the most. Pretty cool stuff.

I always thought dealer photographer would be fun. I spent a lot of time helping the one at the Mercedes dealer I worked at. He had a really good comparison between many different cars (mostly Mercedes and Toyota) because he spent his days moving and photographing them.

A combination of passion and dumb luck.

I got into photography as a hobby after being laid off from my last job, so I built of a bit of a portfolio. After a bunch of failed interviews, and a HA-larious incident at another tech company, it was pretty much zero hour for finding something that would pay my rent.

Lo and behold, I came across this job listing for a “dealership inventory photographer” for a small outfit based in the area. I got the call for an interview and because I spent my unemployment working on my photography skills, I had the knowledge I needed. Next thing you know, I’m getting assigned my own equipment and doing photo sessions of new and used cars.

It can be very tiring and sometimes you’ll have to deal with bullshit like the plastic covers still being on parts of the interior, or having to move multiple cars just to get to one, but I’m counting my blessings: It pays rent, I’m traveling and seeing parts of California I never had the chance to when working a desk job, I get to work outside, and get to drive some very interesting cars.

It actually sounded meaner than the Hellcat! I was almost tempted to toss them an offer. It’s selling for 16k, but it’s an orphaned GM product with 100k miles lol.

Oh for the record, these photos were taken by my LG V30. The camera I use for this job is a Canon G16.

Wow, that’s definitely making good use of your time. I kind of do the same thing at my job, but the equipment isn’t as nice. Just a simple point and shoot.

I don’t know what the reliability is like on these things, but I don’t fancy having to order parts all the way from Australia to get things fixed. I also don’t know how much component sharing there is - I guess powertrain related stuff should be readily available in North America, but everything else is probably difficult to source.

I wonder what a CarMax warranty goes for on this?

It was based on a Holden wasn’t it? Didn’t they go belly-up?
