Wonderful news!

Today is one of those days (the 3rd of December is another) when we can contemplate the DDR’s version of an upmarket car, the Wartburg 311.

We note while so doing that in the early days they actually took the trouble to style the car and make different versions.

You’ll be paying big money for the coupé, cabrio or camping should you want a decent one.

The sedan in the first picture is a handsome car.

Kinja'd!!!

I’d like to hear this engine exerting itself. Look at that funky shock mount “tower” in the lower right of the picture.

That list of amenities has me swooning.

I’d rock it, sedan or wagon.

+10 years ago I went see one Camping. My friend considered buying one as his summer car. It was semi expensive and no deal was made. The car was in really good condition but we didn’t try to start it ( I don’t remember anymore why).

I know, I was born in the dark part of Germany. They had one flaw though. The chassis ended at the rear axle so the trunk was only supported by the body. With the panoramic rear side windows and the canvas top there were only thin metal strips to take the load. With the general lack of vehicles of all sorts in Eastern Block countries, all wagons had to step in as work haulers/construction vehicles at some point. Imagine what years of bricks or tiles in the back on bumpy roads do to the structural integrity of such a compromised design! Wartburg even offered replacement bodies, as it was it was common for a car to get full on resto every 10-15 years due to the lack of new cars. These replacement bodies didn’t have the canvas top, so a few of them lost that feature over the years.

These were so pretty to look at, it almost seemed like the designer must have pulled a fast one on the Communist minister in charge of the auto industry to sneak an attractive design through. The replacement 353 seemed more appropriately Eastern bloc.
