For your time.

Kinja'd!!!

I don’t like my current job. I’m trying to find a new one. I’m signed up for a networking event with a prospective employer that I would like to work for in an industry that I think I would enjoy more.

The question is, at this networking event, do I bring business cards from my current job, dust off ones from college, or get new ones made up?

Current job for sure. Always always always ALWAYS use the most recent/accurate ones. If anyone gets pissy, explain that you’re trying to make contacts and build connections.....you know, networking!

Besides, this isn’t for an interview so you don’t need to explain your desire to jump careers or fields right away. There is a subtle art to being able to smoothly pass a card during conversation and be like “So if your company ever needs help in this field...or if you’re looking for someone to join your team, just keep my card and let me know”.

i would say print up a new one that is like a short resume listing ur skills or something like that. i would not bring the current employer as some idiot could call up at their number asking for you and that they met u at that thing and are interested in hiring you

New ones made. It’s not too expensive if you use Vistaprint. Spend a little more and get the one without the Vistaprint branding and you’ll be set.

Im sure you already know all this but just in case, remember to dress to impress, LinkedIn with EVERYONE after the event and make sure you send a note and not just an invite to connect. Offer your card first to so they’re more likely to give you theirs back. Also, name tag always on the top right side of your shirt (basically a few inches below your right shoulder) That way when they go to shake your hand your name is naturally in their line of sight.

I don’t have experience in that area but instinct tell me use the current ones. Also... edgy photo, better than $kaycog :P

I wouldn’t print more than basic contact info and current job title on a business card I had done up outside of a company. You could make it like a mini resume, and your card would stand out, but it would stand out for all the wrong reasons.

Unless you are in a very creative/design focused field, going too far away from function will make it more likely you’ll get your resume/card passed over.

Well, the event is being held with the intention of finding people to hire.

...And?

All the more reason to use a current company card. It’s like they say - it’s easier to get a job when you already have one. If you’re concerned about privacy, then write your personal cell phone number on some cards or highlight that number on the cards if its already on them. Indicate to other people that’s the way you wish to be contacted. I haven’t yet encountered a company that calls the front desk of another company (especially if they’re competitors) and goes “Yeah I spoke to so-and-so at our recruitment fair the other day and he was looking for a new job and he said he worked here.....can you transfer me?” so I wouldn’t be concerned about this biting you in the ass.

My cards only list my direct line and a fax. Who faxes anymore.....

No chance of calling a front desk.

Yeah then definitely use your current employer’s cards. Don’t overthink this!

The real question is, which is more professional? I’m betting your current job one.

Also, your picture suggests showing up to the event with a Packard 120. You should get on that.
