So i dropped off my 100 series land cruiser at the Goodyear by my office. I’ve been using them for two years, mainly out of convenience, and been happy ado far.

For some background, i use my truck to explore the national forests, and have some mild mods: small lift, aftermarket skid plates, 33" tires, fox shocks, etc. Anyways, i dropped off my truck for an oil charge and front sway bar bushings. I got the call it was done and walked over. Right away i notice they hadn’t put my skid plates back on, since you can see them from the side. They bring it back in and put them on. However they still missed the transfer case skid. I bring this up and they insist it didn’t have one. Bullshit. We go back and forth and i leave in anger. Five minutes later i get a call that they found it. Goo figure. I go back and take it from them, i don’t let them install it.

So tonight i have some time and go out to put it back on, since we’re headed up north this weekend. To my delight i find that instead of using my existing bolt holes, they’ve put big self tapping screws into my frame and transmission cross member. They did tell me that some bolts broke when they were reinstalling the skid, but they said they removed them. No word of drilling new holes. As a result of them putting in new screws in non - original spots, i can’t even install my transfer case skid plate.

I dropped it off this morning, reamed the manager, and told them to fix their f-up by using rivet nuts or something. The key is, i live in salt country and now have a bunch of new holes in my frame, skids, and cross member. Do i make them replace them? I have no problem going to small claims over this.

Here are some pictures to show what I’m dealing with

Time to find a new shop.

Get a quote to patch the holes. Then present them the option to pay for it. If they say no, then take them to court.

That’s ugly. :|

Yeah, uh, they definitely need to cop to damages.

This. A decent shop should be able to weld the holes, but they will also need some POR15 or some kind of coating to resist corrosion afterwords. Get a full quote, then demand the shop reimburse you. If they don’t, sounds like it’s time for small claims.

WTF

This is why people drive their cars into the front doors of shops. Good lord that is some damn lazy work on their part.

That’s just sloppy bullshit. Good on you for noticing right away - it would be wayyyy to easy for them to deny responsibility if you found it much later.

I had a shop remove the reinforcement plate on my BMW and not put it back - but didn’t notice it for a year or so (until the car was on a lift again), and it cost me a few hundred bucks to get a new one. Why they even removed it, I have no effing clue.

Second what Future next gen S2000 owner and MR2-FTW said.

What everyone else already said! People complain about stealerships all the time, but I find that the service depts there (although higher priced) are a lot better than the Goodyears and Firestones of the world. Of course, good indie shops seem to be the best if you get recommendations.

Our local Goodyear pulled some similar shit on us which is why I’ll never use them again.

A few years back, we had recently purchased a 1998 Ram 1500 5.9. We were in the process of moving out of town, so most of my tools were packed, but I still had my basic set. I set to task replacing plugs when one was apparently stripped. Shattered in the head. My FIL said take it to Goodyear they can remove it and repair, so we did.

Three weeks it took them to R&R the head. When we got it back, no AC! I stopped immediately back in and the manager sez to me, he sez ‘the AC was dead when you brought it in, sorry.’ Nope. I walk him outside and show him where his tech cut one of the lines in order to clear the head. He reluctantly agreed to fix.

What I didn’t know is that, along with the AC, they disconnected the trans cooler line. Improperly. They flooded the trans with engine coolant. The trans lasted about 3 months, surprisingly, until it left us stranded.

Tl;dr fuck Goodyear.

Wow. Hackalicious. Aside from what everyone else has said, I wouldn’t even rust those self tappers if you landed on a rock in the middle of nowhere. Worst case, this could leave you stranded by breaking a skid off and then renovating your oil pan to have a new window or something.

Get the holes welded shut. Then you should grind them flat and rustproof. A muffler shop can probably do the filling in a half hour.

I would not let them do the repairs, I’d try and negotiate a reimbursement. A bill from Midas and some paint will be cheaper than a manager/owner having to go to court.

Also, do NOT let them touch anything with POR15. You should do that part.

I would be fucking livid. In an older toyota truck an extra hole in the frame is a death sentence with salt. If you have them pay for patching make sure it’s an exceptionally good job and gets a nice coat of por15. If they refuse to pay then 100% take them to court.

That can go both ways, though - - I had a *dealer* remove the reinforcement plate on my BMW and not put it back - but didn’t notice it for a year or so (until the car was on a lift again), and it cost me a few hundred bucks to get a new one. Why they even removed it, I have no effing clue.

And the guy that found and fixed it properly was working on the car in his home garage - best of both worlds, a great BMW Master Tech doing side jobs. ;)

There are great techs at dealers and at indys - and some lousy ones at both, too.

The main complaint with dealer repairs is typically cost. Their techs are usually solid. I’ve always had good luck with this shop, so i guess i got a bad tech or something

Agreed. Not to mention it makes it even more difficult to take the skids on and off for maintenance. At present my transfer case is exposed since the bolt holes for it are covered up

I got nothing to add which hasn’t already been said. Just try to be friendly at first and allow them the chance to make it right but if they can’t/won’t then you need to tell them you’ll put them on blast on social media and then do so with pure righteous indignation.

Also never ever go back there.

I third what Future next gen S2000 owner said. They need to fix their mistake. A real shop should be able to weld hose shut for you and cover them um with some undercoating or black paint to keep it from rusting.

Get the estimate, get them to pay or court it is.

inexcusable - you give the owner of the shop one chance to make it right and if that doesn’t happen you go full f’n broadside on them, lawyer up, report them to everybody under the sun.
