It’s Almost Time To Winterize And Store My Talon

Sad day indeed, but I’ve come to the realization that it’s almost time to winterize and store my beloved 1990 Talon TSi. My buddy just stored his Challenger SCAT, and I now realize that I need to enjoy my precious time I have left.

I just ordered some Sta-Bil to put into the fuel tank, and I’m going to pull each spark plug and put a teaspoon of Mystery Marvel Oil into each cylinder. I’m also going to order a battery tender, and she’s gonna hibernate until roughly the end of April.

The mercury has dropped below 32 a few times now in mid-Ohio and we’ve had snow fall already, I refuse to drive this car through any salt. Plus, it’s quite challenging to drive on a cold and damp day. Torque steer is an understatement.

Do you store your car for winter? What’s your ritual for doing so?

Putting the Chevelle away either tomorrow or Saturday morning (depends how late I’m at work tomorrow & the weather). Just going to put in some stabilizer and fill up the gas tank, drive it in to storage, and take the battery home with me. Nothing crazy.

The RX-7 will be spending the winter in my garage, getting all the rubber bits replaced and an overall suspension refresh; no major plans for it other than once again some stabilizer in the gas tank sometime soon. (The Chevelle has to move out for the winter so I can park the beater inside (much warmer in the mornings, etc).)

This is my first year storing a vehicle for the winter.

I am putting steel wool in the pipes, mothballs under the hood, moisture absorbent inside and a healthy coat of wax on the exterior. I still plan to drive it when the sun is out in the winter. We don’t get snow or road salt in Vancouver, BC.

I know a guy who puts blocks under the frame of his car to save on spring/suspension wear... I dunno about that.

Steel wool in the exhaust is extremely smart, I didn’t think about that myself to keep out the critters. Good advice!

As far as suspension wear, I’d think it would be pretty negligible

Ahhhh I heard RX7 and instantly got jealous. Also what year Chevelle?

Yeah, I got the steel wool idea from a classic car owner.

The blocks under frame thing.. I just nodded and said “makes sense” to the guy (it doesn’t)

Nope. Winter tires and I’ll set the ride height as high as possible though. I’m hoping to be up in the mountains drifting forest service roads every weekend...

LOL right, seems like more risk than reward on using blocks personally. The steel wool thing however is pure brilliance. Will be using that myself.

‘71 Chevelle - It’s a rolling project, recently finished swapping in a 4-speed (was a 2-speed auto). Next year it gets the engine rebuilt and maybe some bodywork.

‘85 RX-7 - my daily from when I got it in June until the weather got too lousy in the past couple weeks. It will resume daily duties in the spring.

(Also super-rusty-but-trusty ‘02 Crown Vic Interceptor in the background up there for salt & general beater duty. It doesn’t have rockers, half the paint is rustoleum, and the exhaust is leaky but it keeps on going - this may be its last winter.)

I have a soft spot for a Chevelle, my dad had his beloved 70 SS, your 71 looks really nice! Plus a 4 speed swap makes it even better.

Also an FB, you truly have an awesome little fleet going on there. I’m jealous!

I wish I could bring myself to drive mine, but salt and other people scare me. Plus I know I scare me.

just put my ‘79 Super Beetle into storage today! had the same storage ritual for years now, fairly straightforward: Stabil in a full tank of gas, overinflate the tires a tad, pull the battery, and put dryer sheets inside the car (in lieu of mothballs). See ya in 6 months!

Bright lights and an 18" double tone firetruck horn help me as far as other people go. Plus Seattle doesn’t salt roads. And 100whp on a good day means I can’t get in TOO much trouble.

Until the Borg-warner turbo goes on... Tripling the available power should hopefully make for some added excitement!

Now I’ve gotta know, what kind of vehicle are we referring to?

Drier sheets, never thought about that one either. I’m learning quite a bit tonight!

NA Miata. The engine is on its last legs (330,000 miles!) so after winter it will be swapped for an NB Miata engine, preferably with VVT, then boosted. Besides cooling which I haven’t touched yet, all other systems have been built up to withstand and work well with 250-300hp

Stabil, full gas tank, few extra pounds in the tires ,and a blue tarp on the floor to keep moisture from coming up. Old guy down the road does to his 69 442 for the last 25 years and it looks new. Oh and a battery tender too.
