Cold weather makes loving cars tough

Kinja'd!!!

As the temps drop I find myself driving in 40 degree weather with my window down and heat blasting just so I can hear my exhaust instead of just the muffled vibrations through the sound deadening. One month after setting up my exhaust to perfection (for me) I have to start riding windows up so random pedestrians get to enjoy the soundtrack while I’m sealed up inside.

Sure, cold starts sound great, but sitting my ass down into an ice cold leather seat and hunching over an ice cold leather steering wheel as I baby the TL to speed is not as enjoyable.

Don’t even get me started on road salt...well I’ll just add that 2 of my last 3 vehicles were destroyed by rust. And although the TL is certainly better rustproofed than a 3rd gen 4Runner, it’s still a 12 year old Japanese car.

Kinja'd!!!

The biggest unknown is how the snow hooning will be, this being my first fwd car (besides a brief stint with a 300m that I’d rather forget). I guess I’ll find an open lot and get a little bold with the ebrake and see what happens...

Kinja'd!!!

Did I miss any other cold weather annoyances of being a car guy?

Here’s a positive spin: cold and salt destroy cars, so you have to always be shopping for your next one. I think otherwise I’d basically keep my E46 forever, but I have to thinking about a replacement, even when I’m not. That’s exactly how I ended up with my car, despite not really looking when I bought it.

So there’s that.

The cold air is basically free horsepower.

As sad as it as I do love car shopping. No matter how perfect a car is im not sure I could drive it for 15 years

You don’t have heated seats?

For the rust, you just need some Krown or other similar product. Coated brake rotors are now plentiful in the market :o)

If you can afford them, winter tires make things much easier to deal with.

Seats are heated! Guess I’m just impatient/don’t feel it through my jacket for a couple minutes.

And yeah I’m pretty proactive with rustproofing but some cars become too far gone, especially when I don’t have a property where I can hose down underbody frequently.

And yeah I’m using buying winter tires as an excuse to upsize to 18s and get new wherls

Cold weather sucks. This is why I left Pennsylvania for the southwest and have no intention of ever moving back.

Nice, I’m a little up north right outside dc. My sister is down there now, and my younger sister is hoping to go there next year (she hears back in a week!) Always love going down to catch a game .

Seems like 70% of tech students are from northern Virginia or D.C. Area in general. We’re having a pretty good season this year! Just gotta get through Miami and Georgia tech (my brothers alma mater)

Yup, I’ve been in this area for a while and when I was graduating high school it was pretty much either VT, UVA, JMU, or Mason. That Miami game should be a good one!

Maybe consider getting one of those remote starts that also puts the heat on/heated seat. If possible it would be a great upgrade for someone up in VT.

I do love car shopping, but I’ve also determined that an E46 manual wagon is about perfect for me. I’ve been driving one for 8 years and don’t see that changing soon. But I also have other cars so that may help. I always gravitate back to the E46, though...

I really need to look into remote start. I sometimes bite the bullet and run out and start it but if I could start it up while I walk up to the top floor of the garage it would be a game changer.

Sound deadening is the worst. I want to hear the noises my cars make.
