Kinja'd!!!

It’s not really car related, but I need somewhere to vent over some work frustrations.

I cannot wait until next week when we finally have some adult supervision in the office again. Our boss is on vacation this week and I’m covering her shift, although just as a worker bee and not in any supervisory capacity. The problem seems to be with cell phones. Some people can’t be trusted to use them only on their own time, and it’s causing additional workload from those of use who are responsible enough to keep them tucked away during working hours.

One guy took three 5 minute breaks in the first hour of his shift to allegedly go 20 feet to get more ice for his cup. Then he’s staring down at his phone most of the morning, keeping it out of view of the security cameras, whilst the rest of use are taking all of the phone and radio calls. Yahoo is up on his computer screen, and there’s no work-related reason he needs to be on Yahoo. He clocked in from lunch and then immediately took a 20 minute restroom break, making my lunch 20+ minutes late. Another guy takes at least two 20+ minute breaks to allegedly drop a deuce during the day, usually during times of peak activity. We get an hour for lunch and a 15 minute break, and these guys are really pushing it. What do you want to bet that these breaks wouldn’t be nearly as long if they didn’t have their phones with them?

I tend to prefer working in the afternoon when most of the people on shift are all 50+. They’re not addicted to social media and are there just to get the job done. There’s a certain professionalism and responsibility that comes from knowing that if they get fired at their age it’s unlikely that they’ll be able to get another decent job like this, something that the kids in the office don’t seem to understand (and may need a harsh lesson to figure out.)

I like my co-workers, but sometimes I wish they’d stop it with their phones, seemingly endless socializing and visiting of non work-related websites. I don’t want to sound like a nag, but I resent having to increase my workload so that they can spend company time on non work activities. Come in, work your shift to the best of your ability, and then go home and have a life at that point - am I asking too much?

being that im just a low level worker drone... phones are banned on the work floor... sounds like you need to enforce that too

(incidentally.. your story is also why us lowly workers resent the lazy office fuckers)

Fight fire with fire and just continue to do YOUR workload, not taking on any extra just because someone’s jacking off in the bathroom. Or press them about it directly and let them know you have an issue with it instead of bottling it up.

Change that to ‘the’ lazy office fuckers instead of ‘you’ and I agree with you.

I’d love to see something like this.

Years ago I worked in this complex of buildings near LAX:

Kinja'd!!!

See that red bridge between the buildings? That was the only place inside where you could get cell phone reception. It was hilarious to see people lined up at lunch or on their breaks on either side of this structure in order to make their personal calls. I don’t know if was the structure of the buildings or the frequencies used on phones back then, but I’d like to see more structures be hostile towards cell phones.

Sometimes, it’s hard to get someone to take a job and come to work.

BUT I FEEL YA’.

Thanks for that change. I really love the work and helping out those in our society that just want to lead as normal a life as possible, and I try my hardest every day to try to give that to them. I’m willing to say that a good portion of us that drive sometimes take that freedom for granted. I know I felt kind of trapped when I voluntarily gave up driving when I was unemployed at the beginning of the decade, finding that getting around for basic things like job interviews or getting groceries was an involved process that took up more time than it would if I just fired up the car. I can only imagine how much more difficult it would be with a physical or mental handicap.

We get it from all sides - management, passengers and the drivers. It’s a wonder we’re not all raging alcoholics. We’re constantly walking a tightrope, trying to balance the needs of all parties involved, and invariably someone’s going to be pissed off. Today was just one of those days where nothing seemed to be going right, but all we could do was persevere and (eventually) get people where they needed to be...

So many good places around there. I was partial to Peruvian food, and frequently went to El Pollo Inka; I have yet to find affordable Peruvian here in STL. Houston’s was another favorite. There’s also a cheap Mexican chain that we used to frequent, El Tarasco. I became such a regular at one location that when they would see my car pull up they would have my iced tea, chips and favorite salsa waiting at my usual table, and would just have to ask if it was going to be the carne asada or carnitas that evening, and the food would be out in no time.

I appreciate the kind words. I’m really an introverted, quiet and reserved person, but I love getting on the phones and talking to the customers, even if it’s only for 42 seconds at a time (the target for talk time on the customer service lines). I just think to myself that I’m talking to my beloved late grandmother and do whatever I can for them (within reason and in guidelines, of course).

While not as much as I made working IT in the entertainment industry, I make a reasonably comfortable income, more than I’ve made in years. And when I walk out that door I leave the job behind and am not a 60+ hour a week salaried corporate slave like I used to be. Living only 2 miles from the office means I can get home quickly and have a nice life outside of work. Having that balance is a wonderful thing.

The only downside can be some of the shifts. We’re a 24/7 operation, so sometimes you get stuck on some crappy shifts for months at a time. I can adapt to the change, no problem, but I did have to give up a number of volunteer commitments because I couldn’t be there on a regular and consistent basis. C’est la vie...

The only downside to that place was a phenomena known as T he El Tarasco Shits . A friend and I would go there frequently, and on the way back to my place we’d have to determine who would be in greater need of my one bathroom first.

I feel like constantly being on the phone is a huge problem with younger workers. I work at a dealership and there’s a pretty noticeable age divide within the sales team, I’d say 75% of the under-30 salespeople rarely put their phone down because they’re doing something unrelated to work.

Hourly or salery? i usually listen to music on my phone to drown out office noise.

What drives me nuts at my current place is the work is highly irregular partially due to a manager who doesn’t see the annoyance with 5:00 meetings. teh resr of us have been here since 8;30 to 9.

Kinja'd!!!

Its made worse by 2 managers who swing in 10;30-11 and come and go as they please. you want to work 9-5 sure. you want me to work 9-6:30, because you decided to take a 2 hour lunch and come up with a bunch of project changes at 4:00 we have a few issues.

The best, like I had at Hughes Aircraft: salaried, with paid overtime.

We’re in a noisy environment with six of us crammed into one small area with phones and radios going off constantly. The problem is people that should be answering phone and radio calls actively ignoring those to check sports scores or Facebook or other unrelated things, leaving others to pick up the slack. Drivers and customers are waiting for answers that are delayed due to some people placing their personal interests over work-related tasks.

In my simple little world you’re on the clock to do a job, so do it and then clock out and do whatever you want on your time. Don’t inconvenience passengers, drivers or co-workers to surf the web. Do what you want on your breaks, but be reasonable on the length and number of breaks taken. I can dream, can’t I?

I don’t really have any social media, and I don’t obsess over things like sports, but I wonder how I’d carry that over to a resume.
