Gesture Control was the silliest thing I had ever seen until I realized it is the best thing ever and just being implemented horrifically. Infotainment gesture controls are terrible...when in the front seat. Place this in the center of the rear seat and I would call gesture control the next big trend.

Handsfree Tailgates and Trunks that involve a foot swipe or standing behind the car for who knows how long are all being implemented incorrectly. Waiting is inconvient and the dumbest way to activate a convience feature, so standing behind a car for five seconds while the trunk opens is unacceptable.

The footswipe would be fine if the sensors were at the sides of the bumper instead of the center. That would rid the world of attempting to dodge a tailgate coming at you while youre balancing on one leg and holding something cumbersome. I thought for sure someone would have sued an automaker for making them fall over by now, or at least some left hamstring injury.

Thankfully, I believe Jaguar, Volvo, and a lot of upcoming SUVs are moving the sensor to the side of the bumper. That means an actual button on the hatch or trunk will no longer be needed.

I don’t like gesture controls for drivers, at all! There’s no need, especially with autonomous cruising being active. Gesture control could be the next big step forward in interior designing but the technology makes the most sense when applied to passengers rather than drivers (until autonomous driving is completely in). We could be completely rid of buttons on passenger doors, trunk/hatch, fuel tank, and hood releases.

Even dropping rear seats or moving the front passenger seat forward when you load large items into the back of a hatch or trunk could be facilated by a gesture. It’s all about thinking past the driver’s seat and realizing that all the technology and trends going forward are about being a passenger.

I concur.

Most of the ideas are poorly thought out.

I was at a GMC service center and one of the guys working there wanted me to look at the suburban or yukon xl or whatever.

So he goes to show me a button in trunk that makes the seats fall down to allow you to slide big things in... i say - what button makes the seats pop back up? - oh we don’t have that.

Say I am in the driver’s seat and my wife is struggling with a bulky thing in the back, is there a button i can push to make seats fall down? - oh. we don’t have that up front. only in the back... well.. wtf. As a taxi/uber/lift driver who drives one of those, wouldn’t that be useful or is it expected that the driver hops out and pushes a button somewhere 30 feet back of the steering wheel?

Another thing is that the seats don’t fall into the floor to make the floor flush. Minivan can do it. why can’t SUV?

Infotainment controls in the backseat? My car, my stereo. If you’re not happy with my music, get headphones.
And I want knobs and buttons, preferably on the wheel, so I don’t have to look away from the road to find them.

Handsfree tailgate? I don’t even like failure-prone electric tailgate latches.

I don’t get why everything on a car has to become electrified now. Battery dies or a cable breaks, and you can’t do anything.

I’m just looking forward to the first virus that’ll do something when it sees you giving someone the middle finger while driving.

Stow and Go seats eats up to much space to work on an SUV. They need things like ground clearance, AWD/4x4, suspensions with more travel, and bigger gas tanks. Not to mention it’s requires thinner less comfortable seats that most SUV buyers wouldn’t find acceptable.

Even on the Caravan you couldn’t get AWD if you wanted Stow ‘n Go.

To be honest, the hands-free tailgate is actually really nice. The X1 I had as a loaner for the last 3 weeks had it, and it was pretty damn useful when unloading groceries. I didn’t have to set anything down to shut the tailgate, just kick under and walk away. The reason why nobody’s been sued for knocking people over with the auto tailgate is that they stop with even the slightest resistance(or at least the X1's did).

As for gesture controls, the only, and I really mean only one that I would want is the wave the hand to skip to the next song/station. Anything other than that would be meaningless to me. But it would be funny seeing what the car would interpret a pair of Italians having a normal conversation as.

I see a trend of tactile, physical buttons and knobs coming back. And I love it. Hidden buttons, and touch screens are more appealing to the eye but doesn’t really matter once you actually start driving.

As for gesture controls. I didn’t ny really see the appeal. It would be kinda funny to us it for a manual mode. Where you just move your hand to shift. Terrible idea but it would be entertaining

OK. Fair points. Make the trunk floor a bit higher and when you fold seats, everything is flush. I know I am being a party pooper. I just want what I want and I don’t want what I don’t want.

Gesture control is the single worse gimmick I can think of, and I LOVE stupid gimmicks.

Third row power up and down has been an option on Mercedes for quite a few years already. But no driver switches for third row. Land Rover and Mercedes both have second and third rows that fold completely flat. I’m sure there are others, and yeah they’re expensive, but we have the technology!

Gesture controls, touch pads, touch screens, all stupid. Give us tactile buttons and knobs.

Yeah. I know. Baffles me that they half assed the tech. Overcharge for the truck... and prance around the truck like they re-invented the wheel.

It’s not rocket science. Motorized seat up and down. Button in the back.. button in the front. Easy. Nope. We must be happy with what they give us

My assumption is they want you paying attention the whole time the seats are moving in case anything gets in the way. But then, why not monitor for resistance to movement? Who knows what car designers (or accountants) have going through their minds.
