How many goddamn powertrains will the W222 S-Class have before it dies?

If we look at all of the drivetrains the S-Class has been available with worldwide, before and after the facelift this year...I count right around 17 different powertrain options, assuming we don’t count RWD and 4Matic separately. In the contest between Mercedes and BMW to see who can have the most confusing, convoluted lineup...this may be the three pointed star’s trump card.

Mercedes replaced all gasoline and diesel V6 engines with inline 6 engines with the facelift last year so there’s that.

Well at first all the powertrains were carryovers from the W221 but now they’re switching over new ones.

Also a lot of them have different badge numbers in Europe/world markets than in the US but are actually the same engine.

Personally I’m a huge fan of the 4.7L TTV8 I have in mine. At least 520 lb-ft of torque from 1500 rpm, so hopefully the new 4.0L will deliver a similar low-rev swell.

I don’t think “I have free housing so I can spend more on cars and still have savings” is hiring.

However, “I bought my W222 CPO 1 year old with 12k miles for under 60% of MSRP” might be hiring. You’ll have to ask.

:( but thanks! Where does one... sign up for free housing?
