The basics: used, three rows, $11,000 or less

Deal-killers: older than 2012, over 75k miles, a Dodge Journey

Preferences: RWD, not a maintenance nightmare waiting to happen, not a base-trim model, Bluetooth, not a Ford product

Cherry on top: V6 or larger engine

Don’t worry about looking for specific cars in my area, I’m just looking for ideas. Anything you can say personally about your experience with your suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

As payment, here is a beautiful car that I will never own:

Man the 2012 cutoff gives you like 5 total options. If you want to spend less for something older maybe a 3rd gen Montero or v70 with third row added

Why rwd? The only things I can think of that are 3 rows, rwd, and not Ford are the Durango 4x2 or the assorted GM full-size SUVs. I don’t think any of them would be below $11k for a 2012 or newer.

Yep they are two fold in jumper seats that can fold to the side to use the trunk and can be folded so you can access them from the trunk of you want. Pretty creative design. And yeah the fourth gen definitely could have fit one and the fifth gen can for sure. My 3rd gen 4Runner however barely fit a Second row.

True on the Explorer and Pathfinder. I drove a 2013 Explorer the other day, its wasn’t bad (well, this particular one was - bad wheel bearings, I’m certain of it), but i didn’t really like it. And then again, yes, just a couple thousand more than I can manage.

Current gen Durangos can be had under $11k if you look hard enough and don’t mind a 150k mile Mercedes ML Jeep Grand Cherokee with a huge ass Dodge...

The 3.6 is a nice motor, quite stout and reliable. The HEMI has lifter issues so I’d stay away. Third row is large and accessible.

Now actual 3 Row within Criteria. I think the Ford Flex is starting to get there in pricing

I’d consider the Acura. A friend of mine worked at a Honda dealership, and basically said all Honda transmissions are made of glass. But MDX/Pilot would definitely fit the bill, even if a little older.

I’m not keen on Ford right now, but I’ve yet to try a Flex. Why no love for the Koreans?

Hyundai Santa Fe / Kia Sorento

Looks like the occasional high mileage Nissan Pathfinder or Toyota Sienna sneaks into this price range.

go try what you find and be prepared to be surprised.

when we were shopping for ours, I wanted a Flex, but my wife hated the looks. I didn’t even look at the highlander since the toyota tax huge. They were asking more for a used base model than the price of a new base model...(2014vs2015)

the dealers reasoning was good luck finding a new one so Fuck you Toyota.

I didn’t want a Durango, cause it’s a Dodge.

tried the pathfinder to cross it off my list because of CVT

but ended up buying a 2014 pathfinder SL(with 20000kms) with tech package cause of fuel economy, and the smooth constant acceleration. That and the interior was miles better than the ford. extra roomy second row, and good access to the 3rd row and still has cargo space in the rear with the rd row up.

The KIA was crossed off the list because of the fact you can carry 1 box of cereal with the 3rd row up.

Keep in mind the Sorento is the same size and wheelbase as the 2-row Santa Fe Sport, so the 3rd row is pretty small, and there’s not much room behind it. The 3-row Santa Fe is a good bit larger and roomier.

I like the Sorento but if 3 rows were a big need for me I’m not sure it’d be my first choice.

Brakes are wear items, no sweat there. It’s expected.

I’m more worried about stupid cost-cutting things, like plastic parts in the cooling system, cheap alternator bearings, ball joints that reliably fail at 40k... Obviously, I’m speaking from experience on this stuff, but in YOUR experience... nothing like that? I’m just tired of being nickle-and-dimed, or living with something that’s constantly falling apart...

I’m a parts manager at a CJDR dealer. I wouldn’t have gotten my wife a Durango if I didn’t trust them... and we RARELY see them come in for any major work, unless its a HEMI with a manifold leak or lifter tick.

We’ve only seen things like seals go out (timing cover, transfer case output), and we have a few customers with well over 150k on them. Same can be said for the WK Grand Cherokees, since its the same platform, minus the fancy air suspension bits and 4WD options, and plus a third row in its bulbous ass.

But yeah, no wonky weird out of the norm failures.

Last one we had was a police car that took out the camshaft, that was a $2500 job.

There’s what some would call an inherent flaw in the HEMI with the way the lifters are oiled. Or lack thereof. Not sure if they’ve made them more resistant or not, or if there’s an aftermarket fix, but I haven’t seen any come BACK for lifters a second time.

I have a 2003 TrailBlazer EXT V8 4x4 that my family bought new in 2003.

Current mileage: 233,441

No transmission issues, no engine problems. I think I’ve replaced the water pump a little more than usual but that’s it.

This speaks volumes, thank you!

I had a 2001 S-10 Blazer a few years ago; everything but the engine was falling apart. But that 4.3 was a champion. And the 4WD system was really damn good.

You really do need a backup if you’re going to daily drive. But a cheap honda accord or toyota camry will do the trick if your old car breaks down. The second car is just an A -> B machine. At least that’s my plan.

Out of the way and no backup camera, but this is exactly what I’m talking about.

I agree on the xc90, was just surprised it was there. But the Koreans, good under warrenty bad out of. And at 75k you have 25k before everything falls apart. Also the newer technicians for the Koreans are just as bad. Heard some recent horror stories.

Also the Hondas transmissions aren’t bad after 07, it’s more the torque converters.

Good knowledge on the Korean makes. Thanks for that.

As to the Hondas; whether it’s a tranny or a TC that blows up, it’s kind of a moot point, because they both require tranny-out repairs. Sucks, because I kinda like 2nd-gen Pilots.

I’ll keep an eye out for those, thank you!

Backup camera, shmackup camera. I read a review over at TTAC yesterday, where the guy bitched about not having a backup camera in the rental he picked up. I dunno, maybe I’m some special ubermensch or something (kinda doubt it tho!), but I’ve lived this long without a backup camera, and I don’t think it’s really a deal breaker. I mean, I have eyes, and my head can swivel, so... LOL!

Don’t the bumpers fair pretty well in low speed front end collisions also ?
