Kinja'd!!!

So the potential of getting a set of full on winters now exists, i see a new entry, the Sumitomo Ice Edge. Guy says they test higher than Blizzaks. Internet has no test results anywhere.

Can anyone find anything to verify they are any good at all? $40 less than blizzaks here.

*is for Tacoma*

I also get to watch a guy in the waiting area feeding his Monster drink addiction and pacing about muttering brief rages to himself.

Looks like they just came out this year, and they’re another cheap studdable winter tire to compete with the General Altimax Arctic.

The tread pattern looks like a winter tire, and they have the mountain snowflake stamp for severe snow duty rating. Tires have to pass an actual test to get the mountain snowflake, so generally anything with the mountain snowflake stamp is a safe bet. But as far as how they compare to other winter tires, who knows?

Get the cheapest dedicated winter rubber. They are all so far ahead of all-seasons that buying the “best” is almost a non-issue.

I’ve had great experiences with Dunlop WinterMaxx tires. Cheaper than Blizzaks and perform just about as well in the tests I’ve seen.

Is this for a truck? Frankly I prefer to have something similar to your photo for a truck. The super soft rubber on a tire like a blizzak gets eaten up very quickly on a truck. Those sumatomo’s look like a super sipped Hankook AT tire.

I’ve gotten some very good prices and service using www.discounttiredirect.com and having the tires installed at America’s Tire. I have zero experience with snow tires...

Yep, for a Tacoma. Discount tire guy on the phone started preaching about Coopers when I inquired about Blizzaks in a specific size, checking stock. Didn’t know what to say..

Guy at a tire shop was pushing these. I said nope. Give me blizzaks.

Last thing I want to deal with in a winter storm is tire shenanigans.

My mom’s boyfiend got the Cooper Discover M&S on his Chevy Avalanche, without studs. He was very happy with them through a pretty rough winter. Studs are really only necessary is you have a 2wd or end up driving on ice all the time. I hate studs on dry pavement. Our 3/4 ton and 1-ton truck kills studs in about 500-1000 miles.

Check into the Continental WinterContact SI. Both TireRack and Road & Track rated them better than WS80s, with R&T equating them as pretty close to Michelin X-Ice3s and Nokian Hakkapellitta R2s, and they are cheaper than the General Altimax Arctics. If the reviews are accurate, this is the best deal out there on winter tires, IMO. I’ll be running them on my FR-S this winter.

My 2 cents is that Discount advice isn’t worth much. I find that they are inconsistent and often heavily favor whatever deal they are getting on invoice.

So true. And probably manufacturer discounts, which is probably why I see every single car with either Michelin Pilot Sport AS3's when obviously that’s overkill. Or Pilot Super Sports even though that’s just ridiculous.

The AS3's just kill me, though. I’d say most drivers don’t need such an aggressive all season tire. Shit, even I didn’t want it. I wanted a luxury tire, but they didn’t have it.

Hijacking this a bit but I’m gonna need new tires in a few months for my Ram 1500... 275/60R20

The stock Goodyear Wranglers are pretty meh and I want ATs, stock wheels and size, no lift. Do you know a thing or 2 about Falken AT3Ws? Thanks

I went with Winterfires. Tire rack numbers show them about equal with the Blizzak 965's (light truck rated) which have a higher load rating. So they’re a touch louder, I’ve enjoyed the winterfires on the wife’s rav, where they make slick stuff into a grippy gravel road.

And that turns out correct, as in its better than a near competitor. Therefore, it must be better better...

Ah, yeah I didn’t realize you were looking for truck tires. Not sure if the WinterMaxx comes in your size.

Good I’m glad they are up selling AS3s.

Honestly think about the absolute SHIT tires most cars have. If anything more grip will make shitty drivers marginally better. I am a great driver IMO but I can’t beat bad tires. When I drive cars with some random ass brand and they are chirping in a car that has less than 150 HP I know they can’t work well in the rain or in an evasive maneuver.

But the problem is they’re not really upselling, not in the traditional sense.

I’m not sure how familiar you are with America’s Tire ratings, but I’ll go over it briefly.

They have three classifications: Good, Better, Best.

In nonmarketing bullshit, it really is: Shit, Acceptable, Good.

Most brands under Good include their in-house brand Arizonians, which are made in Asia I believe, and other Asian brands.

Good, I believe, includes “budget” brands like Falken, Khumo, and I think some Hankook and Yoko’s.

Best includes the big name brands: Michelin, Continental, Goodyear, Pirelli, and some Yokohamas and then the higher end from Hankook and Yoko.

America’s Tire is selling AS3's to the customers who were already going to buy “Best” tires. So instead of getting a crap Pirelli (I don’t like Pirelli), they push Michelin.

It’s rare, but the only people they’re actually going to upsell an AS3 to is a “Better” customer, but that usually involves dropping the price of the tire, or it’s during a sales event where you get a higher rebate when you buy four “Best” tires.

I have never seen a salesman be able to sell a customer who has Arizonians a pair of AS3's. Arizonians, and other “Good” brands are so cheap most people are way too cheap to even go up to the “Better” category. Those people are also the idiots that run until cords are showing.

I’ve got a set of the Cooper Discoverer M&S for my F-150 that are an excellent winter tire. Before last winter I had just run AT’s and used 4 wheel drive (a lot). With the Cooper’s on I rarely had to use 4x4 last winter.
