Best way to sell cars?

I’ve always done Craigslist in the past, but I think I’m going to need to branch out for my next batch. What’s the best gamble? Ebay? Mecum/Barret? BaT? Hemings? Something else I don’t know about yet?

Car 1: is actually a Jeep. A final year XJ cherokee in a ridiculously rare combination of 2-door manual transmission 4x4. Oh, and it has under 97k original miles and has spent its life in a rust-free climate. I don’t want to sell this one because I’ll probably never have another this good, but profit. Estimate value $8-10k

The second car is the TA, my 1-of-2000 1981 Pontiac Trans Am Daytona pace car. 57k miles all-original no-rust time capsule. Estimate value of $20-30k

Lastly, is my Tundra I don’t need to sell, but would for the right price. 4.7, 2wd TRD with relatively low miles at 144k and major service performed at 90k. I’d love to get over $10k for it, but realistically should range from $6-8k depending on the market.

It’s no longer with me, but I did love it to death. Granted the transmission was slipping...it was wonderful

I’d be interested in this, too. I’ve had luck on CL in the past, but it seems to have really gone to crap. Even selling mundane inexpensive items is a chore now.

You’re really optimistic about your XJ price, with the trimmed fenders and tire wear. XJ buyers don’t have $10,000 to spend, and people with $10,000 to spend don’t want an XJ.

As an 04-05 auto owner I also fear transmission problems. I wish I could’ve found a cl-s with a stick because that’s the holy grail to me of that gen and I’d probably take one over a 3G auto

When I bought the TL-S I didn’t want a stick, as my commute took me everywhere..looking back at it, I’d probably still have it if it were a manual.

I love your gen TL’s so much, they’ll never look old

Forums? Not a large market for either of those cars, I wouldn’t think, so you need to locate the enthusiasts.

Is that Cherokee really worth that much money all cut up like it is?

Yeah it’s an 05 with 140k and it looks and drives better than a ton of newer cars I’ve driven. I’ve been keeping up with preventative trans maintenance so hopefully I get a couple good years out of it

Oddly enough, Facebook Marketplace isn’t bad. There’s a certain reassurance to local buyers, especially seeing their names and profiles first (if they’re legit).

I find fb marketplace is better for buyers since the prices are very low. A lot of sellers that have no clue what they have so half the cars are sub $5k

are you willing to ship, and/or work with buyers out of town?

if so, I’d say venture into the other platforms. but if you dont want that hassle, a well written FB and CL ad would be best route. with perhaps links to those ads on a few model specific forums (and oppo, best to post it here as “critique my ad” as a sly method of sharing you for sale *wink* )

This may sound stupid, but hear me out. Maybe you could list it on one of the mass market chains like CarGurus or Autotrader. I have no idea if they charge anything significant; I’ve never listed a car. You might not think a Trans Am of that vintage would belong there, but the thing is, when I google “used [car x]”, those chains come up top of the list. So, if you have someone starting from a general search the way I did when I was looking, you would potentially get maximum internet exposure that way.

Next down my list would be eBay, and then CL after that.

Do not auction your TA unless you are SURE it will pull what you think. BJ and Mecum will take a bite out of your take home.

I’d post it in Hemmings and on enthusiast forums. Maybe cars-on-line too.

That trans am feels to me like a car to sell on enthusiast forums or on BAT, as it is only going to be worth a premium price to folks that know what it is and are looking for one. A casual 2nd gen buyer may not know enough or care enough to pony up for a special one. Nice car!

The jeep seems pretty crack-pipe on the price, but I also live in an area where every vehicle is rust free, so old jeeps without rust aren’t in any way special here. I know folks will often put 10k into an old XJ over the course of ownership, but I don’t know how many of those folks actually buy cars for 10k up front. For me, I’d throw an XJ up on ebay/list o’ craig’s. Some fender flares and a couple of cans of satin black spray paint on that front bumper thing might go a long ways towards making it more salable.

That Tundra looks pretty clean and priced right. A year ago, I might have been interested in it for 6-7k. For a nice truck like that under 10k, I’d probably just throw a for sale sign on it and park it someplace prominent. It would also probably be a good candidate for craigslist/local classifieds. That might actually be a good candidate for your newspapers classifieds. There are still some folks who read them, and I’ve found them to be pretty good to deal with.

I don’t want to burst your bubble, but I think your prices seem to be WAY high.

As mentioned elsewhere, with cut fenders (or even if you put flares on it), I don’t see a Cherokee going for anywhere north of 7k.

The T/A. I know a fair amount about 2nd gens. And unless the market has completely blown up in the last few years, I don’t see anyone giving more than about 12-15k for it.

As for where to see, you might want to try autotrader. Or maybe something like classic car trader for the T/A.

I’ve had pretty decent luck with craigslist.

I’ve also used AutoTrader. I mention that one because AutoTrader has more advanced search tools that make it easier for someone looking for something specific to find your weird crap. The other benefit is that it’s not limited to regional audiences. Someone looking for a weird rare Firebird or a one of one 2 door cherokee may be willing to travel a long distance to find one like yours.

CL is still what I use mostly. Facebook is OK, but is much harder to search so you won’t get much exposure after the first day or two. As others have mentioned, specific forums and/ or facebook groups work pretty well.

I did have really good luck selling my buggy on eBay. I’d been on the local CL for over six months so on a whim I threw it on eBay. Had a buyer in less than a week. I had some concerns about it so I called eBay and talked to an actual person who calmed my concerns and even offered to send me info on the buyer. It was unreal. Transaction went really well.

Don’t ever sell the T/A, unless you flatout have to.

Mainly I worry that with a discontinued brand, you may get the itch for another down the road and it might not be affordable.
