Kinja'd!!!

If I was a mechanical engineer I feel like it would be so much easier to find a career somewhere in the racing industry. Being a business student is not helping my cause. My searching has not netted many promising results.

Software engineering would probably be even better. Sucks to hear this though, I’m in business to and getting into racing somehow would be awesome.

I’m trying to learn some basic software on my own. Since I’m not a Management Information Systems major I can’t take classes to learn.

*insert generic response about how easy math is spoken by someone who is good at math*

But seriously, my brain doesn’t do math either. I’m more about words.

When you start using imaginary symbols and letters to describe numbers.....I’m out

Marketing and sponsorship is a big part of the game. My University SAE team just put out a big call for business students to manage that side.

The opportunities are there, keep looking!

Change your major to marketing. Become a racecar driver. Use various social media platforms to hype yourself.

That advice will be $59.99

That depends how you want to implement your degree in racing. I know a few engineers with TRD that are located here as consultants for the Furniture Row NASCAR team. When my nephew asked about how to get his foot in the door, the response is software engineering; go to school, get an internship with a race team. Software is the big thing at the moment. My father in law works for JRM, and his response is the same. That, or know someone. Ha.

That said, I’ll trade you my ME for your Business. I have never “used” my degree in a professional sense of the word.

That’s exactly what did/am doing. Haven’t gotten much traction yet, but it’s a long process. I’m not getting any younger though...

Start a pay day loan company and go racing for yourself!

Or become a major player in the illegal pot distribution network for NA. Both seem to work, at least for awhile...

I’d say get into the auto industry in whatever way you can, without worrying too much about jumping right into racing. Having industry experience under your belt will help land those gigs, and your time spent at conventions/conferences will increase networking opportunities and possibly make you the connections you need to get there.

That’s how I’m doing it at least.
Sincerely,
A political science major working in the automotive aftermarket, who also wishes he’d gotten an engineering degree

P.S. Also look into what @ Flyboy is FAA certified insane   said. I never knew there was that side to FSAE while in college, only discovered it once I was working my company’s booth at a FSAE event trying to recruit new talent.

Running coke out of SA in a go fast boat is also a temporary option.

I’m trying to learn some software stuff on my own. Major requirements prevent me from being able to take the software/programming courses available to MIS majors.

The racing industry is the dream job in a way. But the auto industry and rail transport industries are also fields I’m looking into.

I’ll have to contact my school’s formula SAE team and see if they need business students or even just regular volunteers. I’ve looked at their webpage before and got the impression it was strictly for engineering students.

Not sure where you’re located, or if you’re willing to relocate, but look into ZF. We do all of that, and more, with offices in pretty much every part of the country (especially now that we own TRW too). If you find a position you’re interested in, send me your resume and I’ll look at submitting an internal referral for ya.
