Nah too much and too exclusive. The other car they left off though is the 488 so thats why I like the MT version a tad better . Even so the one thing I would like to point out its how a coupe from the US is right there with supercars. On C&D and MT comparison the Camaro was again right near the top (MT did it at Seca) Fighting with the 911 (GT3 and Turbo), 570S, and GTR.

So it begs the question, is the Camaro still a pony/muscle car?

It’s a shame that even the budget option on the list is too far out of my budget.

With regards to the Camaro, it’s not a pony car anymore.

I cross shopped my Camaro SS 1LE (which was in the running for BDC last year, and was faster than everything in its class save a GT350R Mustang at one of the C&D Lightning Lap competitions) with an M2, and Motor Trend did a head to head between an SS 1LE and an M4.

And GM ended up with my money. So there.

The 720S also beat the Ford GT in Top Gear’s test too if you’re interested.

True, but there could have been arguable pro-Britain bias at play there.

Thats what i was thinking and I did see they loved the SS 1LE over the M4. They even tested the V6 1LE vs the M2 and it just lost due it being a camaro without a V8.

And at Willow Springs the 350R was the same as the SS 1LE, with more HP and better tires IIRC. And again if you put the ZL1 1LE in there, its a $40-$70k sports coupe from US, hanging there with $150k+ cars and some north of $300K. We used to think the Corvettes were a bargain but now since GM put engineering behind the Camaro since the 5th gen, its become the bargain in performance and handling.

Also I remember you were searching for a Blue 1LE right? Assuming you found one and how do you like it so far?

As a Mustang owner, my opinion is that the Pony cars are trending to being better than the german sports coupes/sedans like the BMW 3 series and Audi A5. The performance is there for sure, and the tech/cabins are getting there. Quality won’t be, but that’s OK.

The ‘18 Mustang with the new PP2 is going to be really interesting to see in all these comparisons, and it begs the question of what, if anything, will the next super-stang be? Will the GT350 get an upgrade for ‘19, what will it be, or will there be something new to fill that higher performance void?

It’s already here .

GM has blessed the red-headed step child of GM Performance with exquisite gifts from Daddy Corvette and Mama Cadillac-V. eLSD, MagneRide, Recaros, suede steering wheel and shifter, stupidly wide wheels, a 6 speed manual, dual mode exhaust, and the LT1 engine. Oh, and the optional Performance Data Recorder. All this for $46K (or thereabouts).

I did a few light laps the morning after I bought it. Not enough to cause concern during break in, but enough to pass the snot out of basically everyone in the novice group.

Wow that is gorgeous car, congrats. I’d say it was worth the wait for the that Blue. Reminds me of the Acura Kinetic Blue. And sounds like its a blast. How wide are the rear tires? On my 4th gen im sitting on 265s right now but i know those are bigger.

And all of that for half the price of a striped M4. Its official now the Camaro is now the best performance for the money.

Yeah maybe its just the performance level for Pony cars have risen. As some one with a 4th Gen Camaro, it is amazing to see how far these 2 have gotten. And Quality in the sense of materials or reliability because I’d argue american reliability is way better. Now materials i can see as i doesnt make sense and would be to costly to try and catch the Germans. Though to be honest with the new M4 starting at $66k, its not worth it as a fully loaded SS 1LE that beats it head to head is $46k or a new civic cheaper.

And competition is a great thing as it brings out the best in each other. Im not a fan of the new ‘18 nose but it will be interesting to see what Ford has in store.

And random note, it may have already happened to everyone else but to me the Challenger is no longer a pony car. Its just straight muscle

The SS 1LE and ZL1 have 305/30R20 Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3s from the factory. The wheels are 11 inches wide in the rear (10 up front).

I just picked up a set of pull offs from a standard SS, since the Goodyears are $1400 a set installed, and the standard SS sizes can have all seasons (i.e. not instant hockey pucks when cold) for as little as $775 a set installed.

I’m still keeping the gumballs for the track.

The Challenger has carved out a nice niche for itself and I actually really like the Scat Pack and Hellcat variants.

Reliability? Ehhhh maybe Chevy is better, but the Mustang could use a lot of improvement in that region. My Ecoboost was throwing a CEL within the first 2000 miles, my GT needed a new wheel bearing at 34,000 miles, and there’s all kinds of stories about EB’s blowing up. It’s probably still better than the Germans. Build quality is lacking on the Mustang with terrible panel alignment on every single one.

But even if you’re sacrificing some quality by getting a Pony car over a german sports car, you’re getting something uniquely american with a special powertrain, and that’s worth the difference.

Yeah I agree with the Challenger and even the Charger. They have the muscle 1/4 mile at a time grouping. Because by killing the viper we know dodge doesn’t care about corners.

I have heard the panel gap issues on the mustangs but i didn’t know the reliability/gremlin issues. Though i have heard Ford’s quality is really suffering. And to be honest I haven’t heard may issues or panel issues on the Camaros. Though i haven’t heard much about the 2.0T but they have made that motor since 06. And the usual FCA stuff on the Challengers

And that is true as well. Germans have refined the power and handling. The Americans can be unbridled and brutes with power but now able to not stumble through corners.

We had a GT350 become a car-b-que at a race track with our group before. Oil filter boss experienced failure and sprayed oil over the cat and exhaust manifold.

David Tracy wrote about it.

The ZL1 1LE has 325/30R19 rears and the rear wheels on that are 12 inches wide. So that is even more insane.
