[ Link ] If Kinja’d

Tired with all the speculation and with my lack of nautical knowledge, I visited a few sailing message boards this morning.

I found this link, and a whole lot of sailors saying the same things. This blog summed it all up, so that’s the only link I needed do share.

Appel claims that they couldn’t turn back to Hawaii after the first (made-up) storm because there were no harbors deep enough for a boat the size of theirs. Ignoring the fact that they had just left Hawaii, the islands are also home to several enormous marinas, a Coast Guard base, and PEARL FUCKING HARBOR. If it can hold the Navy, it can hold your 50-footer.

I read that yesterday too, it was fantastic. My favorite line was his comments about the motor breaking because it got wet. “Marine motors are waterproof, you know, because they’re usually installed on boats”

I don’t know dick about sailing, yet my BS meter was reading off the charts when I first heard about this. It’s entertaining to read someone who actually knows something pick this apart.

for anyone who doesnt have the time or patience to read the whole article, allow me to summarize with a brief quote:

Sharks can’t smell you through a fucking boat, you fucking shitweasel.

Yeah, when I first read the story on Jezebel I was suspicious out the door. Shoot, a week of food for two takes up a lot of space...A year’s worth of food for two humans plus dogs, especially cans? That would basically require all of the interior space of that tiny boat.

“They’ve changed their story about the fishing vessel that originally contacted them. Originally they said they were kind, but now report that they feared for their safety. They claim that the fishing boat damaged their boat, and then Appel said, “I also believe that they knew they were damaging the boat. And if we couldn’t get additional help, that boat would sink, and they would get … two girls to do whatever they wanted to.”

“Jennifer Appel confirmed in an interview Tuesday that they had the beacon and did not use it. She said that in her experience, it should be used only when you are in imminent physical danger and going to die in the next 24 hours.”

Look, if you were worried someone was trying to sink your boat for the purposes of mistreating you...wouldn’t this be imminent physical danger?

leaving out the notion that if a crew wanted to mistreat you, they don’t necessarily have to sink your boat first.

as someone who is trying to find space for food storage in a home can tell you, yeah...it takes up a LOT of space.

That was beautiful. Thank you. I particularly liked the part where he breaks down the relevant human physiology.

Also priceless is this:

eeeeeeehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Waterproof or not, a distributer, coil, wires and plugs are still just a that and although sealed a little better if they get wet they ARE useless. The shitty points ignition on my boat was useless bc even a little spray in the engine compartment would knock it out. The DUI HEI was a LOT better, but still a flooded motor won’t run.

Diesel, ok, yea, then he has a point. Once thats running it won’t stop.

I’ve never crossed an ocean, but have crossed Lake Superior from Houghton to Isle Royale which is about 60 miles of open water. If you have no means of propelling your boat you are in a life and death situation. Full Stop. End of story.

If your boat has no means of locomotion and you aren’t able to reach anyone with a radio / cell / sat phone, it’s time to activate your EPIRB if you’ve got one.
