Kinja'd!!!

Chrysler at one point had an entire division dedicated to electric vehicles, ENVI. This division disappeared quicker than any high-profile, high-press area I’ve ever seen. It’s strange to think that after 8 years, all we have is a newly released Pacifica Hybrid.

Kinja'd!!!

FCA, put the electrics where it matters. Give me my JL Scrambler PHEV.

The Fiat 500e’s conversion to electric was also done by the remnants of ENVI, not by Fiat.

And, from everything I’ve heard, it’s actually a really  well-done EV - except for the lack of DC fast charging, it’s better thought-out than some serious attempts at making EVs that aren’t just compliance cars (I’m looking directly at you, Nissan), even though the 500e is the definition of compliance car.

Wasn’t there an Aspen hybrid?

Bankruptcy will do that sometimes.

Yes, although I don’t know how much DaimlerChrysler contributed to that powertrain’s development outside of finances and engine calibrations - my understanding is that the transmission was basically all Allison (GM) designed, and the battery modules were sourced from Primearth EV Energy (Toyota/Panasonic).

Fun fact: the Silverado/Sierra, Tahoe/Yukon/Escalade, Durango/Aspen, ML 450, and X6 all shared the same hybrid system back then.

Perhaps Lightning isn’t an FCA trademark? Or maybe they’ve been focused on Europe instead of America? Who’d have thought?

I thought that it was all a bit of showmanship - basically doing it so that they could say to potential investors that they were forward looking. But as soon as they got money, away it went. I could be totally wrong on that though.

Somewhat related, GEM (the glorified electric golf-cart/utility cart company) was bought during the Daimler Chrysler years, but sold off in 2011 to Polaris. Not that I think they had much tech to contribute...

Yeah there was, but it was a mild hybrid similar to the Tahoe hybrids. I believe they added the motor near the trans, but it was only worth a couple mpgs.

That and venture capital firms running the show... and fiat doesn’t give a shot either, they are just printing money by making trucks and SUVs. Sergio will sell off jeep as he’s packing his golden parachute on his way out the door. Pumping up the balance sheet for now, no worries about development of anything groundbreaking, just bolstering the sales of the money makers.

Fiat doesnt know what they are doing. They should make this car with the 1.5 Abarth engine, even an electric version. Maybe even a Hellcat :P

This car was just a Lotus Europa with a drivetrain swap.
