I wasn’t planning on going, but when my school principal found out that I have been a car journalist (he knew I was currently an anime journalist), he produced a pass for me. Wait. What. I can’t go tomorrow (Friday), because I am taking the Logo to the mechanic, and I can’t go Saturday (I’m picking up a fender for the Logo) so I’ll go on Sunday I guess.

Since I haven’t written for Jalopnik in several months, have been working for an entirely different publication in that time (AnimeNow). I also don’t have any access to Jalopnik front page or subblogs anymore (as would be expected for someone not a current correspondent).

I’m surprised Jalopnik released you since there is a lot going on for the car industry in your area. I thought you were perfectly placed to report, unless your teaching commitments hobbled you.

My teaching commitments and my financial strain at the time hobbled me, yes. It was nearly impossible for Jalopnik and me to agree on any kind of set schedule, consistent workflow, pay amount, etc. This is absolutely NOT a criticism of Jalopnik (if anything, criticism goes to me). Things are potentially changing for the better in that department because of my naturalisation, incoming legal permission to engage in far more journalism work until the naturalisation finishes, and decreased responsibilities in teaching.

And neither have I been flexible either, because I have to maintain my main visa, and I have to avoid long bouts of Japanese unemployment, etc, etc. Things from the very start just never lined up perfectly. No one’s fault, just the truth of being an immigrant. Once my naturalisation finishes, that won’t be an issue, because I could be homeless and not be able to be kicked out of my own country or have to have specific permission to do specific amounts of specific types of work.
