Papa John’s pizza is alright as delivery chain pizzas go, but their sauce is too sweet. Most American commercial pizza sauce has added sugar. If it’s made with good tomatoes, there is no reason for this.

If I get a chain pizza it’s because I want it cheap & convenient, which Domino’s is the best at.

If I want real pizza I get it from my favorite surprisingly good (being as I’m in Wisconsin) mom ‘n pop NY style joint.

The only problem with that place is since it’s thin I usually get an 18 or 20 inch pie which doesn’t fit in my oven to keep warm so I resort to warming slices up on my electric griddle. They don’t have any fancy pizza delivery warming technology like the big chains so home warming is required.

I worked at a papa Johns years ago when their pizza was still good. While I was there they cheapened everything. I got to where I’d only eat it if I had no other choice for food.

Examples: they used to mix relatively fresh tomato sauce with the herbs/spices every morning for that days sauce. They switched to premixed/made sauce. They had to add more salt and preservatives to make it shelf stable. To counteract the nasty taste they added more sweeteners.

The ham and pepperoni slices kept getting thinner and thinner.

The portion cups got smaller and the number of slices of pepperoni/ham reduced.

I think they changed the dough but not 100% on that.

Of course, this was years ago. Dunno if anything changed back or just got worse. I know I still don’t like the sauce anymore ever since the switch to the premade stuff.

I knew at some point they pretty much went to shit, but I didn’t know why. They used to be one of the top chain pizzas available. A rare treat, even, because they were a little pricey in the past. I remember buying and eating them with a girlfriend that was obsessed with them, and always thought highly of their product. Then at some point I ate some and I was like, “why did I ever like this?”.

That said, I will gladly eat Little Squeezer’s, even though it’s kind of shitty, because it’s a highly predictable shitty. I also think their sauce is better, but I have no clue why.

Oh yes, I make most pizzas I eat anymore. The magic is gone from anything short of a brick oven pizza thanks to my handy pizza stone. A can of tomato paste mixed with some seasonings and spread thin on thin-stretched dough covered with top-shelf toppings costs like $3-4/pizza and saves a crazy amount of carbs.

I haven’t had LC pizza in a while but I do get it from time to time. I know it’s not great but the taste and convenience is at the right price.

I live right down the street from an awesome Pizza place but it’s pretty pricey. Most of my pizzas are of the frozen variety out of laziness. I have made my own at home several times but it’s been a while.

I mentioned this elsewhere in the comments but the reason the sauce is so sweet is because they switched to premade sauce. When I first started working there they made the sauce every morning (open can of tomato sauce and mix in herbs/spices). They switched to premade to save money and they had to add a lot of sweetener to counteract the salt/preservatives to make it shelf stable.

I never really “got” the whole Papa John’s/Dominos/Pizza Hut thing. I mean, it isn’t like there’s a shortage of quality independent pizza shops around. The only time I really ever order from any of them is when I check into a mid to low tier hotel late at night in an unfamiliar city, and their menu is in the room’s guestbook.

Sbarro I kind of get, because they’re usually the only pizza place in the mall, and if you’re shopping in the mall and decide you want pizza, that’s their niche. Plus, if you get it when its fresh vs. sitting out under the heatlamp all day, it isn’t all that terrible. Probably a bit closer to “real” pizza than most of the other big chains.
