So it seems Subaru has pulled the plug on the WRX STI and will not be bringing out a new model after the Final Edition, lets hope they wont ditch the boxer engine though as the words needs that burble (yes I know it’s mostly from the UEL headers) just to be different

Well that’s just great...all used STI’s will now be 5-10k more expensive!

Hmm, well the Viziv concept is supposed to be the new WRX, which will be on the new Impreza platform that just came out. I wonder if this means there’s no more STI trim at all, or the STI won’t be going to the UK anymore. I’m a nerd for multiple LSDs and all of the STI diffs are LSDs which I very much like. I’ve never bought one because I don’t want to pay the insurance premium for it. My stupid BMW is much cheaper to insure because supposedly they’re bought by grownups instead of hooligans who do stupid stuff in STIs.

It’s not going to be the same though calling it a Viziv instead of WRX if it indeed does replace it

Just the STI, not the WRX right?

Nope, the whole WRX STI car will be condemned to the history books

Just a point that you didn’t mention and others might not find, this only pertains to the UK.

The article states this is only for the U.K. I’m pretty sure...

The boxer engine layout doesn’t really make any sense though.

They could still call it the WRX, the Viziv is just the name of the concept. Hell, I’d be fine if they ditch the sedan entirely and only sold the Levorg, as long as it had a manual transmission option, even though Levorg sounds like some kind of disease.

This is good news for anyone who may have just scooped up a WRX on the cheap.

nah, they just previewed a next gen WRX concept. Its sticking around for at least one more generation.

WRX and WRX STI? That sucks. Another budget performance car bites the dust I guess.

For performance driving here’s 2 reasons:

First, it requires the entire engine to be ahead of the front axle, leading to a strong forward weight bias and a crappy polar moment of inertia.

Second, in this price range you can’t afford to have a factory installed dry sump, and wet sump boxers are vulnerable to oil starvation in long corners due to the oil creeping up into the backside of the cylinders.

Boxers work for Porsche because they either put the engine completely behind the rear axle and drive all 4 wheels or mount it amidships aiming backwards and go RWD only, and they put dry sumps on all their engines.

Boxers are a really nice engine layout, especially from a NVH standpoint, but they do have some drawbacks that are magnified when using them in a front-engine AWD vehicle.

Lower center of gravity at the expense of a lot of complications and packaging issues a straight 4 wouldn’t have.

I mean you got any other benefits?

Just in the UK where they don’t sell very well to begin with. They still sell really well here in the US (I see 5-10 current generation WRX/STI every day here) and the STI brand still has a ton of credibility around the world. Subaru has already basically confirmed a next generation WRX/STI here in the US and I see 0 reason why they would stop selling them here.

You want that burble? Just kill a cylinder on any other 4 cylinder. They sound terrible. Subaru exhausts have become what civics with fart cans were 10-15 years ago.

It makes complete sense when using Subaru’s “Symmetrical AWD”.

The Subaru system requires a longitudinal engine to be mounted ahead of the front axles. A boxer engine is shorter in length than an inline configuration, and the lower weight distribution will help reduce pitch caused by all the weight in front of the front tires.

I’d rather listen to the sound of a subaru exhaust than a civic fart can

I don’t know if that’s accurate over here. In New England the number of STI’s on the roads is staggering. Subaru makes so much cake on crosstreks and outbacks I think they will be fine with the STI carrying on. The BRZ on the other hand I could see going extinct.

Subaru had their two biggest years for US WRX sales in 2015/2016, selling over 33,000 per year, and 2017 is on pace to be similar. No way they abandon numbers like that.

Ummm... Every trim of 911 besides the Turbo is rear engined, rear wheel drive unless optioned otherwise. The GT3 and GT2RS are RWD only.

Kinja'd!!! "e36Jeff now drives a ZHP" (e36jeff)
11/01/2017 at 16:16, STARS: 0

It was poorly worded. I meant to say if it’s in a Porsche with AWD, it’s mounted behind the rear axle, not imply that all 911s are AWD. I am aware that AWD is not standard across the line and that they are RWD by default except for the Turbo and its various subflavors.

Maybe that finally means they’re putting the EJ25 out to pasture and finally using the FA motor in the STI! That would be amaze-balls!

are they not doing that already? I know there is a FA20DIT but wasn’t sure if it was being used in the STI yet

exceptionally lightweight rotating assemblies due to naturally perfect primary balance (opposed cylinders and short cranks with basically no counter weights.

The shape also makes for great packaging but presents some maintenance issues.

They run very smooth and would be rather quiet too if subaru believed in using sound deadening...
