When does the ragtop (Club?) get the RF’s superior suspension? As much as I like the looks and 4 seasons livability of the RF, I’m not sold on owning that highly complex roof out of warranty, and I’m guessing headroom is worse for trying to fit a helmet. No immediate plans to buy one, but looking forward to picking a well-kept one up in the future for $10-15k.

What is this superior suspension you speak of?

It may just be tweaks/tuning, but all the reviews have talked about less “flop”.

it doesnt matter. Just get aftermarket coilovers. Its the Miata way

sway bars would probably help with that body roll, there’s probably lots of aftermarket options too

Meh. If you haven’t, I’d test drive a regular Club before going straight to the RF. My butt does not detect a whole lot of flop.

I’ve actually test-driven an ND - I believe it was a Club, but not 100% sure - I enjoyed it a lot (and actually fit!, barely), but it’s not like I tested the limits. Wondering if it shows up at the track.

I’m sure you’re right: a Club would be just fine for me, and if I ever feel like I need a change, I can just go aftermarket.

Is it really different tuning, or just different behaviour with the increased weight?

See if you can find the spring and damper stats of cloth top vs RF.

If you’re gonna be tracking it, you’d likely have the top down anyway.

And if you’re not buying one any time soon, there is plenty of time to sit back and see how the mechanical reliability of that top fares.

Personally if I fit in an ND, I’d get an RF 10 times out of 10.

MT: “What they did was change one of the suspension bushings and softened the bump stop so when all the suspension travel is used up, the transition to flop-induced oversteer is less abrupt. This means the RF is easier to control on the limit of grip and easier to predict and balance when you need it most.”

Huh, sounds like a part swap that you (or your mechanic) can do while your car is getting new tires.

Yeah, I guess the question would really be which one I could fit a rollbar into, and pass the “broomstick” test with...

The RF does look great. It would be hard to pass that up.

Changing bump stops requires disassembling shocks/springs. Replacing bushings usually requires a press.

I don’t like the RF. Yeah it looks cool but it’s not enough top down action. Speaking only of power hard top mechanisms, I much prefer the NC PHRT since it’s a full convertible, doesn’t eat up any more cargo space, and only adds ~80 lbs.

I’ve never owned a convertible. I’m so white that I’d be just a morning & evening top down guy anyway. A BRZ/FR-S/86 makes a ton more sense for me, but I’ve loved Mazdas I’ve owned in the past, and the Miata has a draw for me.

As much as I like the looks of the RF, the seeming inability to fit a roll bar for track work probably rules it out for me.

When I drove an NC, I felt like I couldn’t look straight out of the windshield because of my height - didn’t have that issue when I drove the ND.

To be fair I haven’t been on a track and the flop might be there. But I’m good with the suspension on the street.

My base pigmentation is very white but with enough time I can tan pretty thoroughly. When I drove an NB, I had a nice farmer’s tan every summer.

Just hit up 949 Racing and they’ll sell you the right aftermarket suspension to make your softtop handle better than a RF.

If the RF top stops working, then gut it and weld/TIG the panels in place to turn the RF into a true fixed-roof Miata coupe. That’s my plan if one ever comes up at the right price.
