Kinja'd!!!

So...whats the point of a large car if it can’t fit your things, and whats the point of buying a stylish car if you have to put an ugly rack and box on it to make it practical?

The X2 is the only even-numbered BMW X model that doesn’t bother me.

Fun fact: the X2 is 13 inches shorter than the X4 from front to back but has slightly more cargo room both with the seats up and down.

It has more cargo room because its a FWD based Mini. Longitudinal drivetrains til I die.

Yes I know which way the X1/X2 engine is mounted. In a crossover, a vehicle which is supposed to be about packaging efficiency, and isn’t that great to drive, the sideways engine is fine.

(Too late to rearrange, I’m past the edit window.)

I’ve driven several BMW crossovers. Unless you get them in hotted up M Sport or M trim they’re not that fun, even if the engine’s mounted lengthwise.

The X4 and X6 piss me off way more than the X2 because they objectively suck at being crossovers and don’t add anything to the driving experience.

Its certainly a flawed concept, won’t deny that. I’ve only been driven in a X5m and driven a X5, so I don’t know the whole range, but thought they were fine enough.

I’m just not going to stop hating on FWD BMW’s since they did this themselves:

It’s been a long time since BMW had a tightly-focused driver-first lineup. They’re in all kinds of segments now.

I don’t care about a transverse layout in BMW small crossovers and large 5-door hatches where the whole point of those segments is to fit as many people and stuff inside as small of a vehicle as possible on the outside. That purpose is much more readily accomplished with a transverse layout.

The original longitudinal X1 sucked. The only reason to buy it was because it was theoretically a slightly lifted 335xi wagon when there was no such powertrain option available in the real 3-series wagon. But in reality it was too small, with a dinky back seat unfit for adults, and the suspension was too soft.

The new X1 (and X2) aren’t theoretical slightly lifted 335i wagons but they do much better jobs of being small crossovers/hatchbacks. They’re basically the Mini Countryman and Clubman in BMW clothing. Which guess what? That’s fine. The Clubman is a pretty cool little small but roomy runabout that is undone by cutesy styling with the stupid van doors screwing with rear visibility, and a goofy interior layout. The X2 has the same power as the Clubman JCW but you can see out of it.

Sure, in vehicle segments where it makes sense, a longitudinal layout is the way to go for driving dynamics. I actually really enjoy the X3 35i M Sport because it’s big enough that it’s roomy inside both in the back seat and trunk, but it’s not that big, and it’s still fun to drive it like a BMW douche.

But when you get smaller than the X3, the longitudinal layout takes up too much space. Packaging efficiency is key in the mini crossover segment. That’s why I think the Mazda CX-3 is also garbage. Sure it’s supposedly the most fun to drive mini crossover, but it’s goddamn tiny inside. Why buy a crossover that doesn’t do the job of a crossover? You might as well get some other segment.

Luxury companies using down market chassis is just my personal pet peeve. Wont ever be okay with it. I.E.- XTS, ES, A3, etc.

I get your point though, my sister bought a Renegade and I love the little thing. Same size as my old XJ Cherokee but way bigger on the inside. Cant off road like a Cherokee, but thats not anything she’d use it for.

There’s nothing particularly magical about a longitudinal engine layout. Yes rwd is nice for sports cars but otherwise it’s not all that essential. Yes awd cars with longitudinal engines are more likely to have real center differentials but the transverse awd systems are getting better and meet most people’s needs.

Think about it this way: every single example you gave makes sense to use the platform it does, and none of them are taking the place of something sportier.

ES and XTS are comfy boats for people who want as much room as possible. The A3 manages to be roomier inside and the same size outside as the original A4, and it’s not like any other Audi sedans have 50/50 weight balance anyway.

Every assorted transverse engine crossover from Acura, Buick, Cadillac, Infiniti, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lexus and Volvo is totally fine.

Is this stuff exciting? Not necessarily.

Kinja'd!!! "Milky" (jordanmielke)
11/01/2017 at 16:43, STARS: 0

I get they are comfy boats but just buy the cheaper one then. ATS and CTS have great chassis, same with A4-8, you dont get that though when you buy an A3 or XTS. You’re paying more for the badge.

I get why companies make and sell them, but I want the exciting stuff.

Kinja'd!!! "Textured Soy Protein" (texturedsoyprotein)
11/01/2017 at 17:02, STARS: 0

Just because these cars don’t excite you doesn’t mean they don’t have a place. ;)

For people who want an Avalon or LaCrosse but fancier, there are the ES and XTS. It’s entirely possible to prefer that layout but want fancier stuff.

A3 is to catch people at the lower end of the price spectrum for Audi. The MQB platform is plenty capable for a fun-enough small sporty premium-brand sedan.

Sure, for the same price ballpark, the ATS drives better and has way more power than the A3, but the A3 manages to fit a roomier back seat inside of a body that’s 7 inches shorter front to back. Plenty of entry-lux customers are probably more interested in the Audi badge than the rwd platform in the ATS. (I’d rather have the ATS, maybe in coupe form, or a 2-series, but I make irrational car purchases.)
