Kinja'd!!!

Highway 400 shut down after massive accident, two people killed , with that number most likely rising. It looks like a scene of a disaster movie. Furthermore, OPP states there were no environmental conditions they were aware of that would have been a factor, making this most likely human error. Just terrible.

I don’t know what it is, but something needs fixing on the Toronto-Barrie stretch of the 400. Seems like that’s always where the worst shit goes down. Something about it just makes people stupid. There’s a reason I avoid it 90% of the time.

The Holland Marsh is usually the worst area for it, too. Either needs more lanes or just to be completely redesigned.

It’s not like there’s anything to rubberneck at in the Holland Marsh in the middle of the night, either. Doesn’t make much sense.

My dad was saying it’s most likely because it’s a valley: people going north hold down the gas to get up hill, come over the top into the marsh, head downhill, and then realize they’re doing 140 and hit the brakes, which causes everyone to hit the brakes. Or something.

I don’t know, but I know it needs to be fixed.

Likely. IMO random braking causes most accidents on the highway.

...you know, that would be a good spot for a well-marked set of speed cameras. Much as I hate the idea of speed cameras and don’t want what I’m about to suggest to happen in case it opens the floodgates to put up these atrocious instruments all over the place...

What if you banned police from doing radar in that section, publicized it, put in speed cameras set at 150kph and put up signs to mark them at the top of the hill clearly stating what they’re set at and not to brake? No worries about having to nail the brakes since there’s another hill ahead, no need to worry about tickets. It’s a bandaid, yeah, but it needs one

There was an accident with police in attendance just up the road from this scene. I looks like a fuel tanker crested a hill only to find traffic slowing or stopped and was unable to do the same. I believe the 400 is supposed to be closed all day in that area for cleanup, investigation and possible repairs to the pavement.

Considering the MTO is dumping so much money on those mostly-useless electronic signs you’d think they would put one up in that spot.

I believe a lack of paying attention was very likely a factor in this accident and many like it but yeah, some of those electronic signs could definitely be used in situations like this.

There are a lot of hills on that highway between Barrie and Toronto that could use such signage to warn of upcoming accidents or slowdowns.

The same thing happens on Airport Rd., for that matter. Though I doubt it’s justifiable to put those signs on an undivided 2 lane road.
