It’s been found abandoned and undamaged approximately 10 miles away. That was lucky. We’re working on getting it back now.

That’s amazing. I have to wonder what the story is.

“Yo, this is a seriously boring car, why did you steal this one again?”

Because it’s a Honda, bro? V-tec yo?

“Dude, just leave it here and let’s walk home.”

...

But seriously, congrats, that has to be a relief!!

Your Odyssey — found 10 miles from home.
Odysseus — took 10 years to reach home.

Your Odyssey — located in New Haven, home of Ivy League school
Odysseus — King of Ithaca, home of Ivy League school

Coincidence? I think not.

Cars are often stolen to be used to commit other crimes with. If one was going to commit some kind of burglary or robbery, or do something really stupid like a drive by, doing so in a car that doesn’t trace back to them isn’t a bad idea. It’s even better if it is a boring car that stands out less toany possible witnesses in the area. I would venture a guess that there is a good chance this van will have been wiped down for fingerprints and that the cops won’t find any (on the relatively unlikely chance that they dust it for prints on recovery).

As insane as it sounds, some people steal cars when they need to get somewhere, then just abandon it when they’re done. I think Mark Wahlberg talked about doing that when he was on Top Gear

Actually it doesn’t sound insane .... when I was probably 20 (??) I was having a rough time with a variety of things, and decided to just drive to the coast. I had no idea what I was doing and had to park like, 3 miles from the beach. On my way back, feeling bad about life and generally hot, sweaty, sandy, and miserable, I kept leapfrogging with a mail truck.

He would park in front of a house, leave the rig running on the sidewalk, then carry the mail about 100 feet up to each house in this particular row. I’d walk by, then he’d drive past me to the next house, then repeat. I seriously - seriously - considered hopping in the truck, driving it a mile or so to somewhere near my car, then driving it around behind some building and walking over to my car, driving home.

There were few enough people that I wouldn’t have been seen getting out of the mail truck. It was sparsely populated but people were here and there walking to/from the beach. I swear I would have gotten away with it. This is before everyone had a phone in their pocket that could also record HD video; before most people were carrying any kind of cell phone, really.

But I didn’t do it.

* This might be a good question to pose to Oppo sometime. “Would you have done it?”

I definitely wouldn’t do it with a mail truck. Pretty sure that would be a federal offense

I would almost put messing around with the USPS in the same category as bank robbery: crimes with relatively little payoff for the very real risk of seriously long prison sentences (and at least in the case of bank robbery, a very high chance of getting caught). I like to think of them more as cries for help from people who have given up and want to got to place where food, shelter and most decision making is done for them.

Nononono.

You’d be charged with stealing every piece of mail in the truck. And with stealing federal property.

It’s made quite the Odyssey.

Seriously though I’m glad they found it!
