Are they always so twitchy? The steering felt way overboosted. Brakes were strong, but not progressive at all. The throttle was about the only control interface with any sense of nuance (aka, a bit sluggish).

The similar-vintage Explorer i tested felt similar in most regards, though being a bit heavier, the inputs felt a bit more tempered. Except for the suspension, which was stiffer than I’d imagine you’d want it to be.

Anyone experience similar?

I have a 2015 explorer and it is a bit twitchy. At initial turn-in then starts to disappoint, still a sports car compared to the F350.

Most modern cars have crazy-overboosted steering. I can’t stand it. It’s hard to explain, but I think the effort required for certain actions needs to be a proxy for what you’re doing. So the steering in a big SUV should be heavier than in a Miata (it rarely is). Otherwise we might as well just have fully drive-by-wire controls with no connection to the road.

How about cars where the controls are mismatched? Like twitchy steering and hard brakes? Or a really light clutch and a heavy throttle? It messes with your head.

Ugh, it’s gross. Its like they expect everyone to have wimpy appendages or something.

I miss hydraulic steering. :(

Thank you, I’m glad it wasn’t just me, or the car I was testing.

I’m all for “sporty” handling and all, but big cars should feel big..The steering in the Edge was not progressive at all, and as I said before, I feel like the Explorer’s only difference was that it was heavier.

too far in between the seats, not easy to clip on to

and the anchor behind the rear seat is placed under the foldup part that lays flat.

We’re all on our way to Wall-E.

I’m not saying we need to go back to unassisted steering and 24" steering wheels, but a happy medium is nice.

Exactly! I think hydraulic racks were that nice medium. With electric racks, i wish they’d at least give us an option to adjust the steering. Oh, no, wait, that’s reserved for luxury cars only.

The steering is very light on my wife’s 2013 Explorer. It didn’t start out that way. There were some issues with an excessively large center dead zone. When I took it in, they flashed it to the latest program, fixing the dead zone, but making the steering very light. It’s lighter than our Outback and WRX.
