Ahhh, I’m a sucker for old 323's hatchbacks. And it looks fairly straight too ! How’s the rust on this bad boy ?

Some times I hate living in tha flat lands of Wisconsin. This is one of those times. Funny thing is people that are from here things it isn’t flat, because they have several hills they call mountains.

None... Nothing... Not even any surface rust on the chassis...

My rule is that if your ears don’t pop out when driving up and down said mountain road, it’s not a mountain road :)

Man, all these 323s popping up! So much nostalgia.

Well, it’s a bit more than just a 323 ;)

It’s a 323 (well, a Familia) GT-R, the Group A homologation special... 2200 produced worldwide (most in Japan) to satisfy group A regulation at the time.

The “mountains” around here aren’t even big enough to have roads.

Yeah that would be a bit of a problem :)

I want so badly, even just a regular plain old 323/familia, I just think its such a beautiful car, it’s on my list to have you ship me in a couple years

Beautiful? Not sure I’d go that far haha :)

The rear is quite terrible for me... that and the Starlet of the same generation.. ouch! Front look pretty badass though!

yeeeeeeees! I’d love to have a go in a GT-R to compare it to my old GTX.

I think the GT-X is just easier to use... Keeping the GT-R in its powerband is not easy here. Nothing under 4200rpm or so... Then... Baaaam, boost is here!! Fun, but more adapted to less technical roads than where I was ...

Interesting. My 1988 GTX spooled up right around 3000rpm, but it was a pretty small turbo. I’m actually most interested in the GT-R’s transmission and shifter, as the GTX’s were just absolutely terrible.

Sounds like my old 1988 celica all-trac. 3200rpm or so for boost, crazy long throw in the shifter and general clunkiness in that area.

Yep, fairly long throws and it’s just a weak box overall. Mine got to the point where it refused to go into 1st gear at seemingly random points in time. So you’d be forced to start out in 2nd (luckily it had pretty good torque down low — at least compared to my Miata), then you’d shift up through the gears just fine, then come to a stop and 1st would be available again. It made no sense. My Speed6 that replaced the GTX has a much better shifter and transmission.

Yeah, i’ve heard those transmissions are impossible to find. I remember reading an article in Sport Compact Car (like 15 years ago) about how hard it was to get work done on the transmission of their 323 GTX.

The celica transmission felt awful, but was apparently unbreakable, according to internet lore of the time. Mind you, that’s unbreakable for mid-2000's power levels. I’m sure people today could break them left and right with 600+ hp builds.

But I was always curious about the little 323GTX. It weighed hundreds of pounds less than the celica did.

They’re not impossible to find, you just need to know where to look. There are people selling spares on GTX Facebook groups across the US. Frankly the amount of power a modified B6T motor can make is just incredible, but there’s no way to reliably get the power from the motor to the wheels.

I weighed my GTX shortly before selling it. Right around 2500 lbs, with nearly all of that weight down low. Extremely fun to drive, especially on snow, when you aren’t fighting the transmission.

Yes, I know. But it’s still the body style model I learned to drive on, my mother’s was a red 1992. So for me This Is A Car. If you know what I mean. That model style just means a lot to me.

Oh that’s cool! This one is also a 1992 model :)
