This Enter Air pilot attempting to land at Salzburg didn’t have a second go at it. He said, “Nie” and returned to Frankfurt. Then promptly changed his shorts.

There’s a joke about skidmarks somewhere in here.

Should have gone around long before touchdown.

Ooof. I’m guessing that the entire aircraft smelled pretty rank on the return to Frankfurt.

And I’m actually impressed that the mains only touched down once there - I’m not getting any sound, but I suspect he initiated the go-around *before* the right wing dropped. The dangerous moment there is after the bounce - airspeed drops like a stone on the way back up, and if there’s any delay in adding thrust, the aircraft will touch down again. Possibly quite hard and/or flat.

It’s like a very elaborate Red Bull stunt to haze arriving pilots. WILLKOMMEN IN OESTERREICH, motherf*cka!

Seems like 0:05 of the video would have been an excellent time to do that - - but probably a lot sooner than that, in reality.

It’s hard to tell from the audio, since it was probably recorded on a phone and the gusty wind wreaked havoc with it. But it almost sounds like he powered up for a go-around then decided to go for it and cut power at the last second. You can’t hear the engines once he gets over the threshold. I’m continuously amazed by the power of these modern engines, though. Getting that loaded aircraft back in the air after one bounce is pretty impressive.

He said, “Nie” and returned to Frankfurt

...where he demanded a shrubbery? “Nie” is a good response to “When were you in control of that plane?”

Probably never should have left FRA. I was sitting at the gate waiting to push from ORD one day and it was super windy (surprise, right?). This was a little commuter job, and the pilot finally came over the intercom and said, “Folks, it’s too windy. I’m not flying today.”

I knew that was coming, but “Nie” is basically the Polish word for “Nope,” so I went with it.

The change in the engine noise might also be Doppler effect. Hard to be sure.

As always, somehow the ‘best’ pilots seem to be on the ground behind their keyboard...

He/she seemed to have it quite well managed until a gust at 30-50ft or so, and responded properly with a go-around.

I’ve worked with enough pilots to know that the best pilots don’t fall prey to get-home-itis

That was poorly managed well above 50 ft agl

I certainly hope that’s not the case - - terrible decision-making, if so. But as you suggest, it’s probably Doppler effect or something else making it sound that way.

I was on a flight like that once. We landed in Dublin in gale force winds. We were almost on the ground when awind gust hit and the pilot jammed the engines and pulled up to make another pass. It was one of the bumpiest and crazy landings I’ve ever had on a plane. Insert underwear joke here.

damn, that is the dicey-est landing attempt that didn’t end in a crash that I can remember seeing. I am amazed they didn’t go spinning down the runway in a ball of fire when that right wing dipped the last time...

That was a fur ball from the beginning of the video. Might also be a trick of the camera, but the descent looked awful fast when the video started.

Nope, and upon a little research newspapers contradict each other on where it landed. So who knows?

Have you only worked with or actually flown in the cockpit in those conditions, at the controls?

- The plane is moving about because the pilot has a steady hand and knows not to over control to avoid pilot induced oscillations

- The plane was stabilized in the opinion of both pilots otherwise a go around would have been initiated earlier. They had obviously passed all their gates where they are required to be stabilized.

- The outside shows you absolutely nothing about the actual indications of speed, bank, glide etc to judge anything as definitively as you are doing. It even starts at an altitude quite probably below minima where the decision to land has been made, so to perform a go-around dispells any notion of pressing through no matter what.

If the pilot suffered from get-home-eritis he would have pressed on with the landing. There is a video from inside the cabin as well which shows that the wing drop was not due pilot input but simply gust related. The pilot flying was damn quick in managing the go around.

Please don’t be so quick to judge the crew from a video that looks spectacular but shows you no useful info whatsoever. I happen to fly for a living, and I can assure you that just about every single pilot takes the safety of their passengers very seriously and we don’t just mess about saying ‘ah, we’ll make it anyway, no worries’.

Flying into Kiev today, strong winds perpendicular to runway, approaching company limits. I took extra fuel to hold or to return in case our limits were exceeded. I briefed our crew on what to expect and the intentions if the weather was too rough. If you’d have filmed our approach from the ground it probably would not have looked too different from this one aside from the wing drop at the end. But inside we never deviated outside prescribed limits. This is what we do, it’s what we train for and it can be very grating to have someone behind a desk tell you from a video that the approach was a heap of shite and you did it all wrong.

Bruh, word of advice, when you inevitably bend some tin, don’t use this attitude with the investigators. They won’t appreciate it.

If the investigators are working from a YouTube video, making ridiculous statements like yours I’ll take my chances... :)

Luckily, they usually wait with drawing conclusions until they have factual data in hand. FDR traces and such. I’d check your own attitude.
