Well...

The mazda 2 was sold before we got a chance to look at it. I wasn’t too disappointed because I parked next to one with my fiancee and she was convinced it would be too small.

So I found a fiesta 5 speed for sale. It drove great, first time I had ever been in a fiesta to be honest. I liked it, marginally bigger than the mazda 2. But my fiancee couldn’t get the clutch to the floor even with the seat all the way forward. Yes, she is tiny.

So then I came across a jetta. She liked the bigger size, the fact that this one was auto and she really liked how it drove. But the sleeze ball craigslist “dealer” did not photograph one side of the car. When we met him, it soon became obvious why. The passenger front and rear quarter panels, both doors, hood and right side of the front bumper cover had some serious damage. My fiancee didn’t mind, she argued that it gave us more ammo to drop the price. But I think we can find one in better shape without damage history.

We also took a dct focus for a quick spin. I really liked the way it drove, but with the reputation those transmissions have, I wouldn’t be able to sleep at night.

This seems to be the top contender as of now

I am trying to find something that’s Japanese for around 5K, but most have 150K+ miles. We aren’t in a rush, so the search continues....

Kinja'd!!!

Sounds like a corolla would be a good choice in that budget range. I got mine for $3500

Been looking at exactly that. But everyone down here has got so many miles. That, combined with sketchy service history makes me a little uneasy

Don’t get a used VAG product. I’d rather have the Focus with the Powershift DCT. At least it’s a fixable and known fault.

That’s my worry. But browsing the focus forums, people have had 3, 4 trips to the dealer with repairs under warranty and still no fix. If we didn’t live in a state with smog, I wouldn’t be as worried, but since it throws a check engine light, we would be up shit creek in 2 years

Location is important. I’m in southeast Michigan and a decent one in my generation with around 100,000 is around 3-4 grand.

I was just curious so I threw out a net on Autotrader to see what I could find.

A little on your high end, but seems like a good deal:

Camry

Scion TC

More in line with what you wanted to spend:

Camry

Prelude

Accord

wildcard:

GS 300

Be careful of those year accords. From about 08 till 2011 the I-4 have piston ring seating problems. It is mainly due to owners babying the car and not Ferrari tuning them every once and awhile. The rings wont expand and oil will get past and destroy the engine. Had it happen on an 08 with 130k. Easy way of telling is excessive oil smell on the spark plugs.

Now the generation before this (7th gen) was unaffected and bullet proof as my sister has tried to beat her 04 to death at 250k+.

I would look at this first, almost as big but 75k and under $4k
