I have a brand new Subaru Forester today. I don’t really care for it. What can Oppo tell me about it?

I can tell you that it’s not nearly as well built as the Outback.

I agree, I see so many on the road though. Makes me wonder if they even tried anything else.

I was super excited to test drive a Forester XT a couple years ago, but I HATED it.

We’ve got a 2017 manual trans. My wife wanted it over the outback because it’s available with a manual. It’s not a blast to drive, but I don’t hate it either. It’s great for the dog and road trips.

It’s a car. Sold by Subaru.

Doesn’t suck as bad with a manual. Burns oil like crazy.

Its a car that will be altered substantially in the next generation to be much better. This is the last of the “we’re doing great without trying” era for Subaru. I think they are getting around to the idea that they need to work much harder to be competitive. its at least one product cycle away though.

I kinda like the forester. It is good basic AWD transportation that happens to have a crap ton of interior room and and very good fuel efficiency. I would look at it like a Honda CRV or RAV 4 kind of car with a smaller weaker engine.

Yeah, their Honda Playboook is probably getting pretty worn out from being read so many times. I’d love to buy a Subie, but they only check about 90% of the boxes for me. I’m looking for 95%+. A more reliable turbo 4 or, better yet, a more powerful H6. And keep refining that CVT.

I was getting some warranty and recall work done on my Outback and I took the time to investigate the Forester. I’m a Subaru guy through and through and I like how the new Foresters look, but when I closed the door and got the same cheap, “clunk,” you get from a Wrangler, I gave up.

Went car shopping with my mom recently for this class. Forester was top of my list until we went and sat in one and I realized how crappy the interior was on even the top spec trim. Only drivers side power seats? only nice material up to eye level? Poor quality feeling everywhere. She could have gotten a good deal on a RAV4 too but ended up in a CX5. Mazda is on a roll lately. They certainly know they have something to prove.

I had a turbo and loved it. Interior layout was better than Honda and Toyota and it just felt better to drive. It just comes down to preference.

They’re nicely roomy in the front. They’re also nicely wagony.

Other than that, ick.

CX-5 is best choice.

•Disclaimer: I have a 2016 GT AWD

This is how I felt about my mom’s new Forester when I visited earlier this year. She had an ‘05 LL Bean and it was not nicer but it was what I expected from that generation of Subaru. Her new one is loaded but the seats are flat bleachers and nothing feels quality. The upgraded sound system is garbage along with the touchscreen.

The Forester is the only remaining Subaru that looks like it came straight out of the 2002 model year.

We went to check out the brand new 2018 Crosstrek last week. While my wife was the buyer and ended up choosing something else (incoming Oppo acquisition), I must note that it was a huge improvement in both design and cabin space over the outgoing car.

I wish every company would act like they actually wanted to win — all the time. Instead most of what we end up with is little pockets of 3-5 year periods from specific manufacturers where they really brought their A-game. IMHO.

On paper, the Forester is great. In reality, I’d much rather buy a 3-year-old version of its German doppelganger known as the GLK. 300hp, great materials, etc. And honestly, where I live it’s 10x easier to get good service on an old Merc than on any age Subaru.

yup. I can relate though, its not like every day is my A-game either.

True, but if individual traits pervaded companies, we wouldn’t call my problem “Minor Depressive Disorder” and treat it with Wellbutrin. We’d call it “Honditis” and treat it with Seppuku.

Ask your doctor if Seppuku is right for you. Side effects may include low blood pressure, intestinal pain, and sexual side effects. Women who are pregnant should not use Seppuku except under the close supervision of an Obstetrician (see: C-section).
