No prize money, huge risks, huge costs.

I realize its hard to keep up the hype for something like this but man...this is going to be interesting to keep up on.

9 months is a long ducking time to be at sea, and in not very comfy conditions. Hell, it’s a long time to be at sea in comfy conditions.

As far as sailing goes : I wish there was less emphasis on making everything out of carbon fiber and foils. I don’t hate foils, but I don’t love trends that don’t have super bright futures. Foils are limited in what they can offer: you could foil the whole way, but the only way to make it stable is computer controlled foils, which are depressingly complex.

I’d prefer to see some development on a reefable wing sail or kite, and (for my money) some monetary or at least material restrictions.

the VOR yachts aren’t foiled though, just carbon. Hey, its like fiberglass but tougher and lighter...why not?

I don’t have a problem with carbon fiber, just the cost of carbon fiber. Sailing has a problem in the US with being the sport of the super wealthy, but it really doesn’t need to be. The 49er skiffs don’t have to be super expensive to be crazy fast. Neither do windsurfers or kiteboards (although, granted, all the racing versions of those make extensive use of fancy materials). The point, I suppose, is that they were paying €30-40 million before they went to a one design (now it’s “only” €12 million). I’d rather watch a development class where there’s a different way to keep costs down.
