Is the 3.5L pushrod V6 any good? How bad is it to work on? I know transverse V6's suck, but how awful is this one in particular?

The Toyota Solara is basically the same idea, but Toyota reliability. Thats what I have, just realize that if you get a Solara and you’re a guy, the “you bought a girl car” never stops. The downsides to the solara are it’s is 3400 lbs. and no manual option for the V6

NO! I had a friend who had one in Washington. Whenever it rained an ankle deep puddle would form in the drivers footwell.
It would also just randomly not start (starter and battery were fine) due to some weird emissions issue that was never able to be diagnosed.
So I would say no. They’re shit.

You could get the first gen Solara with the 1MZ-FE and the 5MT. TRD even made a supercharger that sat right on top of that V6!

The Solara is a 2-door, and I wouldn’t get the V6 anyway, and the 4-door Camry isn’t available with the panoramic sunroof. If I was going to get a 2-door, I’d get a Scion TC or maybe the M-B C230 coupe, since there’s essentially no chance of finding a manual 318ti with the canvas sunroof “California roof”
A quality Japanese car with a huge sunroof would be way out of budget, unfortunately.
The second cheapest panoramic sunroof option is the Saturn Astra
