Who got stuck for 5 months out to sea and this stood out for me (not including their overall lack of preparedness and required skills to successfully do what they were attempting) regarding their comments about the sharks.

The article says that they lost use of their sat phone early in the voyage and they only had short range VHF radio, why they decided to press on after losing their sat phone is something only they could answer I guess.

I know it’s easy to sit here in my comfy chair and criticize them, but how could they not make some kind of headway with their sails? I know something was broken, but surely they had some time to figure out a way to rig up a sail. Or, were they unable to navigate without their engine (perhaps necessary to generate power)? So many questions; so few apparent backup systems.

They pressed on, but then wound up absolutely nowhere near the direction they were trying to go. I mean, you don’t need a GPS to go nearly due south. How did they intend to navigate in the first place?

I think it really just boils down to a skill gap that they didn’t realized they had due to their inexperience. Got caught up in the romance of a long voyage and weren’t adequately prepared.

THis makes no sense. 1 sharks don’t hunt boats and two they have functioning sails and a compass right? How were they stranded?
There is not enough information in their article and that pisses me off. Like explain why these retards were “stranded” with plenty of food and water.

It just sounds so stupid, ignorant and highly irresponsible.
They were not only putting themselves in harms way but creating a danger in shipping lanes and putting others in danger.

Sorry, when you said “write” I thought you were talking about the post. I agree that they seem to have been totally unready for sailing open water like that and the stories that don’t even question why they were out there without proper communications equipment or the ability to repair their boat are dangerously incomplete at best.

I think you’re right, and they appear to have also lacked improvisational skills that I take for granted, especially where I like to read about adventure travel and no matter how prepared you are, you will meet the unexpected and have to improvise. At face value, they appear to have only been prepared to survive for a long time (good) but problem-solving wasn’t really on their agenda beyond staying alive.
