HOLY CRAP! “The sedan ripped down the Ohio turnpike like a cannonball, the odometer pushing 100 mph as a dozen police and state cruisers tagged behind in pursuit.

Under a cloud-streaked blue sky, the vehicle dipped in and out of lanes of morning traffic, eventually running off the highway completely.

“He’s off road, driving down the ditch,” one of the Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers radioed to the rest of the pursuers, according to dash cam footage. “We are not going to let him get back on the highway.”

But the car kept driving, speeding through the grass running parallel to the roadway.

“Can you advise on intentional contact to stop him?” a trooper radioed.

“One car as gently as possible,” another answered. Slowly, one of the Highway Patrol cars nudged the fleeing vehicle, bringing it to a stop after a 45-mile high-speed chase outside of Cleveland.

Quickly law enforcement swarmed the vehicle.

Troopers reached through the window for the driver, yanking out a 10-year-old who had stolen the family car. It was the second time in as many weeks the unnamed boy had gone joyriding, Cleveland.com reports.

The hour-long chase started in Cleveland earlier Thursday morning. The boy grabbed the keys while waiting for his sister to take him to school. While she showered, he snagged the keys to his mother’s boyfriend’s car, according to Cleveland.com.

Realizing what had happened, the boy’s mother jumped in her own car and pursued the speeding car as the boy piloted around the Cleveland highway and made for the turnpike.

“My ten-year-old stole his dad’s car and he’s running from me,” the mother told a 911 dispatcher.

After police stopped the car, the boy was taken into custody. No charges have been filed yet.

“He was a good driver for being 10-years-old,” an eyewitness to the chase told News 5. “He was three foot tall, he was a very short kid. I don’t even see how he looked over the steering wheel.”

According to Fox8, earlier in October, the boy stole the same car until three-flat tires left him stranded on the side of the highway. The boy’s mother told police he had taken the car because he was “bored.”

I know it’s looked down on, and it serves no good purpose, but god damn would this kid get a whooping in my house growing up.

What was the penalty the first time?!

The best way to punish your kids is to give them lifetime trust issues and the illusion that violence solves problems.

A few takeaways:

1. Wow, a Toyota Avalon makes a not-bad rally car.

2. That one officer that produced that baton...I laughed when he very quickly noticed that the driver is a kid and put it away.

3. The kid was actually pretty smart to avoid the spike strip like that, but he should have gotten back onto the paved surface the first chance he had.

4. I see a potential future career criminal unless someone sets the kid straight. Maybe he can channel his joyriding habits into motorsport?

I think he needs to meet some hardened criminals and realize he doesn’t want to hang out with those guys his whole life...

After going through what I went through with a young career criminal, I have a feeling that stuff doesn’t really work in the long run. They basically need their entire world view changed or else being “scared straight” won’t do a whole lot.

It can be assumed that this child has much, much worse behavioral and home issues, especially if this is the 2nd time doing this. Well behaved children from good homes don’t do things like this.

I would support neutering both the child and his parents as a start to the rehabilitation process.

It’s easy to joke around about, but I wonder if it’s a mental health issue. At least his mom went after him and was concerned for his well-being. In some homes, sadly, the parents probably would just let him go and could care less if he killed himself...

it’s a really good thing I don’t have kids, ‘cos if I did and he pulled anything like that it’s quite likely he wouldn’t live long enough to make his first court date.

‘course, I’d have one of my own then...

there’s a growing body of evidence that says people show signs of being psychopaths as early as three years old. Some people are unfixable.

they usually end up in prison, or the corner office.

From the way the mom talks on the 911 call, it sounds like she isn’t shocked. The child definitely isn’t a straight-A student. He’s probably been in trouble at school multiple times, has behavioral issues to the point that the parents are embarrassed to take him out in public, and is on 17 medications for ADHD and the like.

It sounds like mom has her own issues as well, probably on her own cocktail of anti-depressants. I’d wager that the child probably drinks a significant quantity of sugary / caffeinated beverages as well.

Overall, a very sad situation that needs to be addressed before it gets worse. It’s fortunate that he only banged up a few cars and a road sign, he could have seriously hurt somebody else.

Thankfully I didn’t have to turn any corners. I myself stray far away from drama like that. I fear losing my little foothold on life too much, plus I don’t like bringing hardship upon others. I treat others and property how I wish to be treated.

Such a concept seems lost on people like my ex tenant (the young career criminal). I hope she gets on the right track, and now I’m beginning to realize that it’s not my job to get her (or anyone else, really) on track when they don’t want to improve themselves.
