I’m in need of new drums and shoes on the truck we bought, and trying to decide what is being price smart and what is cutting corners. A local shop quoted me 500 using Denso parts, the dealer is over 800. I can get cheaper parts off of Rock Auto (centric brand), but are they junk? Any experience with the brand? I don’t plan on trailering a boat or anything immediately, though my awesome wife says to keep a track car on mind years down the road. Thoughts?

I think I got all new drums/drums and rotors plus pads for the GX for 300 from EBC. Whats the vehicle?

I don’t recall if Denso, Aisin, or Akebono is the OE manufacturer for Toyota brakes but I doubt you could go wrong with any of them.
I’d pay for better parts if it meant not having to change them as frequently. Did you price OEM from Toyota?

If you’re gonna get reman brake stuff, get it from Napa, it’s better quality than the auto zone stuff. At least this was my experience, and what the mechanics told me.

I don’t have any experience with Centric, but keep an eye out for different tiers within brands. Some brands offer both good parts AND junk. For example, with Raybestos, you’d want to stay away from their “service grade” offerings and choose “professional grade” or “advanced technology” instead.

EBC is about $170 per axle, rotors and pads. The pads are a little dusty but its high quality stuff.

Centric is the manufacturer that owns the Stoptech brand. I used Centric rotors and StopTech pads on my WRX...solidly decent stuff, though nothing special.

I only saw rotors on their site, I got drums (I was told during the PPI. Don’t have it in my possession). Link?

I have Centric pads and sensors from Rock Auto for my F30. Originally going with rotors but they quoted me the wrong one, so I cancelled the item and went to a local shop and got Zimmermann rotors instead.
No issues with them, maybe a very faint squeal initially, but that went away.

Centric makes good stuff, especially their premium line. I’d spring for a “severe duty” set of shoes if they’re readily available, but the rear drums on a newer truck tend not to do a tremendous amount of the braking anyway. Probably the best (most aggressive) shoes out there these days for tow vehicles are Porterfield’s R4-s (which they’ll make up for you for pretty much any shoe ever made), but they’re pricey. Are the drums on the truck already at the service limit? If not, having a local shop turn them for you on brake lathe will probably be a lot cheaper than replacing them.

Nothing wrong with Centric brake parts. Lots of friends who track their Subarus use them for rotors, because they’re cheap, work just fine, there’s no point in putting “nicer” stuff on a track car because they’re just a wear item you’ll destroy in a few events anyway (regardless of brand)
