If you really want to impress, get one running Windows 1.0. I’ve never even seen that running in person.

Program Manager was still present all the way up to XP SP2, and (I think) you could actually still set it as your desktop environment up through Windows 2000.

At one of my previous jobs, I ran a set of Solidscape T66x wax printers:

Running, ah I forget the version of MS DOS.

It’s insane how little computer is needed to make things happen without a GUI.

I’ve read a couple interesting things lately:

The above Thinkpad reminded me of a guy that I was talking to that’s going to run a 486 Thinkpad to RDP into his Windows 10 system. What a fantastic way to use old hardware to access the capability of a modern system.

I am going to try doing this with my WinXP Dell D620 (I love this laptop), so I can access my upstairs Win10 desktop from my couch.

Secondly, I read about this guy that setup a dual processor server to be the only computer in his house, driving several monitors via several graphics cards to all places in the house via a KVM switch and long long runs of DVI and USB cables, check it out: https://hardforum.com/threads/chunes-house-build.1895068/

this guy is nuts! that setup is a tad complicated but interesting read, thanks!

Also I want to RDP into my desktop from my thinkpad now, what software did he use to do this?

A tad bit complicated is a slight understatement, he went balls to the wall on that setup, I admire it for sure!

As far as I know RDP is a microsoft thing, it’s supported from win95 all the way up to current.

Guy I was talking to does it on a win98se machine and says he regularly forgets that he isn’t on his actual win7 machine.

I’m trying it tonight myself (winxp laptop to win10 PC), not sure yet if it requires additional software or if it’s already baked into windows. Here’s some stuff on it from MS: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/17463/windows-7-connect-to-another-computer-remote-desktop-connection

That’s awesome, does it all run pretty smoothly? Were you on wifi or ethernet?

Kinja'd!!! "Nibby" (nibby68)

ethernet, but it doesn’t run that smoothly cause 200MHz and 96MB RAM

Haha that may slow it down a bit.

I just did it yesterday between two win10 machines. My trusty Dell D620 wouldn’t boot into Windows yesterday. I am going to have to figure out what ails it.
