Same builder as I’ve posted before, but a different project. Anyway, I still like it.

Nice. If they could thin down the stringers it’d be even nicer.

Is that just pine stained to look like cedar? Because I think it is.

Amazing he could find that many clean, knot-free, straight 2x4s... but my OCD would have insisted he replace the two blondes, or maybe reordered the whole row from dark to light... definitely. Thanks for sharing!

I couldn’t be certain. Nice Doug fir, if it is...

Those aren’t 2x4s, they’re a specific grade/type of wood used extensively for trim in PNW houses. It’s “VG [something]”, which means it’s wood that is primarily vertical grain with minimal, tight, knots. Everyone generically calls it “Veegee” or “Veegee [Insert conifer name, usually Fir or Pine]” around here...

I like it

for the next one, the guy should try setting the stringer in the wall and using the 2X2's (or what every they are) to hold up the treads

This is in severe need of railings.

It’s not bad and makes me wonder if walls are finally coming back after the open concept obsession in the last 30 or so years (that has been further pushed/maintained beyond reason due to HGTV reruns from the housing boom era keeping terrible style trends well past their reasonable expiration dates).

The treads look like Fir. The uprights look too nice, but I suppose you can buy anything if you throw enough money at it. It’s got the colour and grain right, anyway... I think fwiw I’d put my money on well selected Douglas Fir

Kinja'd!!! "Rusty Vandura - www.tinyurl.com/keepoppo" (rustyvandura)
10/26/2017 at 08:07, STARS: 0

The treads and stringers, I agree, are likely Doug fir. I’m wondering if the uprights might be spruce or something else, maybe even some kind of pine.

I feel like it’s got too much colour variation and distinct grain for pine, at least for Eastern White. Spruce... maybe? Again it seems like too much red for that though. Cedar can have the colour variation but should overall be a deeper red... not cedar.

I trimmed out some doors and windows with similar, it’s just a very high grade/quality Doug fir.

Nice stuff then. Must be pricey.

I love Doug Fir... smells amazing. Any time we do a job with the stuff it makes everything better while it’s here. Of course, you touch it and it runs a dagger through your hand, but still. So nice

I buy tuba-foes surface dry at a lumber yard that come very straight, very tight grain and then I mill them into smaller pieces and make things out of it.

I’m in a wood industry but have no patience for actual woodworking... if I can’t do it with 2x and a hammer I don’t have much interest in it. I’d make a decent framer but a horrible finish carpenter.

More than anything I hate finishing things... stain can gtfo, clearcoat or spray bomb all the way. Or both.

I don’t envy the installer. The smell is wonderful when it’s being cut. The cuts themselves, not so much. Coarse grain softwood is horrible to work with imo

When I’m working with the material I described earlier, I’m using it usually on smaller, one-by sticks. Having said that, I have no idea what else one might use for those uprights that wouldn’t be a hardwood.

There is a local mom and pop mill near where I live that we bought it at. The other wood, like in Zoiberg’s post comes from the PNW area so the grain is not as tight. I have Sierra Pacific Windows and doors made from wood from northern california/oregon/washingtion , it is a beautiful wood, really goes red with age.
