Truck spent the morning at the dealership. Tech spent an hour with it and came back with headgaskets; -no misfire or codes on startup, air through heatercore, overflow bottle discoloured, exhaust smell in rad and overflow.

Estimate is $5040 for new headgaskets including machine and pressure testing the heads. 4 days in the shop and they are booking 2 weeks away. They’ve only had one Tacoma go through this with higher mileage - after they replaced the headgaskets on that truck it turned out to have a cracked block.

A new used 1GR-FE is available for $4000 plus install costs.

Over at the Sales desk they are offering us $5000 trade-in for the truck as is - I get to strip my rack, lights, gear, winters, ?canopy? off it first and then they take the keys.

New 2017 truck is $47,808.88 -> $42,208 after trade.

There is also a 2014 Limited that was sold but the deal just fell through; $43,674.40 -> $38,074 after trade.

So much for rock solid reliability... I realize this is not that common, but how many miles are on it?

I bought a new 2016 Taco Sport, Manual 4x4, double cab for 32,000 plus taxes. Options, is all I’m saying. You have options.

Also look at the costs of doing the heads, with a warranty for a year and selling.

You might consider talking to an indie shop about this job. They might come in a lot less, even if you are actually talking about rebuilding the heads and not just new gaskets and skimming the heads level.

What’s the truck worth with the repairs done? Taco’s have crazy high value, so I’d take the cheapest option to fix it and then sell it if you’re concerned about longevity.

dats rough. Don’t jump to conclusions, shop around for both trucks and repair work. Have they scoped the cylinder bore? Found out if the coolant is washing the pistons?

192,000km (119,000 miles)

Toyota changed the headgasket part number half way through 2006. There are quite a few 2005 Tacoma owners and earlier 4runners with the 1GR-FE who have had headgasket problems as well.

I’m confident I could sell it for $15,000 once it is fixed.

I’d fix it then - that’ll net you an additional $5k to use toward a new truck (if that’s what you want).

Damn. How hard are they to do yourself on these things? Would kind of be a waste to get rid of a Taco at 119k miles.

CAD5,000 seems way, way low for a trade on a Taco. Shop around for some quotes from other shops on the HG repair? I’m sure you can find numbers on all accounts that are more in your favor.

Nope - the Tech spent less than an hour with it. I don’t think they even did a compression test.

I’d fix it, even if the plan is to resell it. Has the dealership said how much they’d give you for it on trade repaired?

Between a ‘14 and ‘17, roughly $4k difference to get in a new vehicle, I’d probably go new. I wouldn’t have any reservations about the third gen. I say that after purposely buying in ‘15, as I knew I wanted a Taco but didn’t want a ‘16 and the potential 1st year teething issues. Of course, your parts would easily move to the ‘14 and not the ‘17.

Sounds like second opinion time. Worst case get a compression test kit and borescope from harbor freight and get your own numbers. What are the symptoms? HG failures aren’t unheard of for the GR, but they aren’t common either.

I’ve seen guys do them for $1700us on Tacoma World - but it’s a garage job and 40+hours for a shadetree..

I was offered $11,000 back in 2015 when the frame was done.

I don’t like the Limited at all - too much luxury vs annoying things like leather and 20in wheels..

I didn’t value the stuff on the Limited to pay more for it over the Sport. Had I decided I wanted to pay more, I would’ve just gone with the TRD Pro.

I guess how I’d look at it, I think pretty much anyone that’s Taco hunting would pay $5k CAD (that’s what, 3700-4000ish USD with the exchange rate) for a low mileage truck without blinking, even with HG issues. Especially one with a frame replacement completed. You’d have to beat em off with a stick here in CO if you listed it on CL at that price.

I think I would find an independent mechanic that would swap in a used engine from a wrecked truck.

Yeah definitely have it repaired before selling. Try an indie instead of a dealer.

Symptoms are coolant overfills and bubbles in the overflow tank during prolonged hwy driving. Engine does not overheat - I watch the Scanguage religiously.

After visiting the t4r forums some of the other symptoms were there too; waterfall sounds behind the heatercore, not super mileage, very sporadic hard start.

It’s a 2005 which is more common for headgaskets than any of the later years.

Dude...

https://carcostcanada.com/

$40k, even for a new one, is highway robbery! Get a CarCost report for the MY2017 configuration you want (or for whatever 2017 you’d buy off the lot, doesn’t matter) and see how much you should actually pay. The difference b/w MSRP and invoice on a Taco looks to be $3-4k (the more equipment, the higher the difference).

In terms of repair or sell: since you mentioned elsewhere in the comments that it’s worth $15k fixed, it’s a no-brainer to spend the $5k to fix it so that you can get $10k back right after. That money plus a CarCost report should net you a very attractive number for a brand new Taco.
