I know we have a couple first gens and a raider, and at least two 3rd gens. Anybody drive the (imo) holy grail of US available monteros?

When I shopped for both my 4runners and my pathfinder I wished the whole time that a clean winter package would show up near me. They run less $$$ than all of those cars and I would muuuch prefer it.

On a side note I wish we had the 4th gen montero here. Unibody comfy and huge to please the family haulers, capable and great for overlanding for the enthusiasts.

You make me sad. I’ve been hunting for one. Hard to get. I have a line on one with a battery drain issue and no rust, but it’s 2000 miles away.

They are hard to find clean, and that tells a story - That they all either lived and died hard family hauler lives, or they died early from natural causes.

My father in law had one we my wife and I were dating, he sold it because the valve guides had given up the ghost and it wasn’t worth fixing for him. high roof too. Sad.

There’s one near me for $750, looks just like the one in that pic. Non running, of course.

Yeah the motor is the real downfall. Not too bad when running but leaks oil and has other common small issues. I believe a lot of these were very poorly maintained though since by the second owner they were like $10k cars max. It sounds crazy but if I had the money to build an overland rig from scratch I’d want to find the cleanest 2.5 gen body with rear locker that I could find and spend 3x the cost of the truck to drop whatever junkyard LS I could find into it.

When I searched I used searchtempest and was looking at practically the whole east coast. Once or twice while I owned th first 4Runner I would see immaculate low mileage examples go for $4000 and it broke my heart.

its hard to find the guts of a great car you love these days and its worth pooring a little into them

Lowball and drop something with 8 cylinders into it

If you have a reliable daily and $15k to spend you can either get an econobox, or fix up an awesome late 90s-early 2000 sports car or overland vehicle exactly how you want it. I know which route I’d go.

Body doesn’t look too bad. It’ll probably rot away before somebody picks it up though

There’s a nearly pristine 1998 with the winter package prices at $1100. It has a battery drain that my gut says is the el cheapo alternator the guy used to replace the original. 2000 miles away.

I love the Gen 2 Monteros. I search high and low for one in college before buying a 4runner. They had the great visibility I liked and you could get them with a diff lock. I might have to start looking again...

My dad had one in the late 90's. Drove it fast and always made my mom nervous because like it or not, these things are very top heavy. It always irked me though how he treated it like a Japanese Range Rover. It was pretty luxurious and I always thought the compass up front was cool as a kid. For some reason right after the turn of the century he went and replaced it with an Eddie Bauer Expedition.

They are indeed a little tippy at speed. Im not sure what your experience is but damn that is quite a downgrade to the expedition unless you need the extra room.

Anybody who can range from old Montero to a multicar Porsche garage sounds like a gear head to me

He is, but hes a very specific gearhead. But pretty much hes a Porsche-head. I mean the man has Porsche driving gloves and a Porsche hat he wears when he drives his 911.
