So I have the Saabaru deal that is going on and now that is at risk of falling apart. I plan to take it if I can get it for under $7k. But if the seller is not on board with that, then I will be walking. However, I am left with a predicament in that scenario. I was already flying to California but I had moved my flight for free from LA to SF. However, if the deal goes south I still need to get to LA that night. I have looked at moving my flight back ($200), another flight to LA ($160), one way rental car ($125 plus gas), or a Greyhound bus ($40 plus costs to get to the bus).

Another thought I had was that I have $8600 burning a hole in my pocket, a need for a fun car, and I have the afternoon in San Fran to figure it out. Could always go the one way rental car route and then use that to go check out cars. It would make the trip not a TOTAL loss. So, anyone please send me options for manual cars in the SF bay area that would be fun for $8600 and be less of a bad idea than a Saabaru with bad head gaskets. Its gonna be my daily and road trip car and just needs to be more practical than my Miata. Beyond that, I am open to options!

Clearly I like bad ideas:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Probably even DUMBER:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Whats the worst that can happen?

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Humor me Oppo, I want to seriously consider this course of action. Obviously im like 75% sure id rather just wait and patiently find what I want in LA. But I would rather at least shop around for fun.

RSX is probably the most sensible option. Isn’t that over priced though? Or are they all over priced in general? Might as well buy a 2004 350z for that price.

I feel like people crap all over the 350z, but it is a really good and viable option for someone looking for something inexpensive and fun.

This car is a little over your budget, but you might be able to talk them down. Most importantly, it only has 44k miles.

No more than every other car I know of. I’ve driven the crap out of mine for 8k miles beyond the 47k it had when I bought it, and it’s taken it like a champ. Most people have no issues, those that do are really loud about it, I suspect.

That’s an outlier. It is overpriced, but it also has ridiculously low mileage and is unmodified, which are both rare for them.

There has to be something wrong with that RSX. Lousy pictures too which make me think the guy is hiding something.

I wonder if its possible to put a ski rack on these? Definitely wouldnt fit two sets of skis and gear inside one of those. MAYBE since I have accomplished it with my Miata. But it wouldnt be much better lol.

The hardtops do have roof racks available. Thule makes one, so yeah, you can get a ski rack.

Yes its more than Id be willing to pay, I just like the car so it was worth considering. Craigslist asking prices are always all over the place. And lowballing is part of craigslist decorum so I would go in guns blazing at like $6k lol.

The concern is the odd choice of pictures. Makes me think there is front end damage or the seller is just dumb.

I did enjoy the 370z I rented recently. But honestly I dont want something small and RWD. Yeah its a little more practical than my Miata and a ton more power, but idk how interesting it was to me. It would not be a very good ski vehicle and just wasnt incredibly special to me. MIGHT work for me since I did like the car but im just not sure.

Kinja'd!!! "Wrong Wheel Drive (41%)" (rduncan5678)
10/25/2017 at 11:04, STARS: 0

An MR2 is too similar to my Miata and would not make for a good ski vehicle. RX8 would be awesome but definitely not a first model year lol. Id want like a recently rebuilt ‘08. But that is not a good long distance car either way haha.

That saabaru though is a good option. I wish it wasnt fucking silver though. If I cant talk the original seller down a bit more, then id be interested in reaching out to this guy at least.

I was confused why the hell SF to LA was 9 hours without taking like the PCH the whole way (if it werent closed at the moment). If I do buy something, Im down to stop by though, I would rather take the 101 down than the 5. Will need to stop along the way for a quick bite anyways!

Kinja'd!!! "Wrong Wheel Drive (41%)" (rduncan5678)
10/25/2017 at 15:07, STARS: 1

I mean it would be great if they turn out to not be bad. But as far as the seller and I know, they are certainly bad. And even if I ignore everything else, thats $3-4k of wiggle room to work with. Thats why taking half that off the price seems fair to me. Since it is a “minor leak” I would definitely just drive it like that for a bit and feel like I got away with a major deal. But it worries me that the car was beat on and is worse than it appears. So its more like a risk reduction than it is just purely financial for my motivation to get the price below 7k.

Stupid reliable, fun, fast, well under budget, and could probably be flipped for an easy profit depending on your local market. Biggest downside? Not a corner carver.

Kinja'd!!! "Wrong Wheel Drive (41%)" (rduncan5678)
10/25/2017 at 16:08, STARS: 0

Agreed, thats an even bigger red flag that it is actually leaking then. It makes me think its really been ragged on. That plus the other red flags make it scary to pay more than $8k for. He wouldnt take my $7500 offer, so the deal is off.

Mine has been the ultimate road trip wagon. I’ve taken it sea to shining sea and through over 30 states. Super comfortable, interior is surprisingly luxurious (giant sunroof, excellent leather, heated seats, bluetooth compatible in the 2007+ models) handles anything I need to carry (I even put three sets of snow tires in it once), can handle moderate off roading if you find yourself in the dirt, and when you wanna go she’ll go.
