Kinja'd!!!

Mitsubishi becoming a non-sports car company is your fault for not buying their cars. None of us get to complain because odds are none of us cared in the first place.

How dare you bring your reality and facts here??!!

That being said, a halo car is something every manufacturer has and it keeps the brand image alive, even if they don’t make money off of it.

The fucking circlejerk is unbearable sometimes. Who gives a shit anymore, sports cars have never been profitable. I swear there’s a relevant xkcd on this.

Bullshit. Mitsubishi is doing the same thing every other large manufacturer is doing - tossing low volume sporty models for high volume sellers. Mitsubishi never had anything competitive here anyway. The 3000GT was too expensive and weird, the Eclipse was a joke after the 2nd gen stopped production, the Galant is a shitbox, the Diamante was an unknown flagship sedan, and you can’t build an empire off selling a $30-$40K boy racer mobile.

ETA: This sounds more aggressive than intended. Also, the Diamante was the shit.

Mitsubishi is in dire straits in the US because their more vanilla offerings are not selling well. Sports cars are not profitable, as someone else mentioned. Mitsubishi needs to rebuild their foundation before they go out and start building a new Evo.

Not opinion, fact. It’s like the people who complain how bad their life is but refuse to do anything to change it.

Still, I’ll be sad if Alfa or Maserati or Jag goes under, even though I haven’t bought any of their cars. The fact they haven’t made anything that I actually want to buy since the time I have the money to purchase it (i.e. since I was born) is by-the-by.

Sports cars used to be profitable in the 60s. Britain built their entire export market around them.

Sports cars are no longer profitable in the majority of cases ( cough Porsche cough M-series cough AMG).

The current gen Pajero may be unibody so technically a crossover but it’s still capable and would be a great deal for a family hauler if it was sold here.

Yeah Alfa’s definitely teetering, although I do think that if they’re stuck with they can make headway. Just needs perseverance, which takes money, which Fiat hasn’t got a fantastic amount of.

Jag’s a testament to that. Back in the dying days of the Ford era they were in the exact same state as Alfa. Inject a bunch of cash from an investor that actually has the will and patience to succeed in the automotive landscape and a sprinkle of inspirational leadership and job done.

I told a college friend a few years back to get the Evo 10 over the STI because he’ll never take it off asphalt, and he listened! I consider that doing my part :D

I could have afforded to buy an EVO, but I live in a state with no Mitsubishi dealer, I have two kids and a large dog. So I bought a Subaru Outback. I also see Mitsubishi going down the road of Suzuki and Isuzu and fading out of the picture entirely in the next 2-5 years. Honestly I’m surprised they are still trying to sell passenger cars in the US.

Horseshit.

I have never bought new/used, even been in any STI ever, or even any Subaru in general and yet they are all apparently selling like hotcakes.

Therefore I can complain about the lack of an STI hatch, etc.

The general revisionist history of the internet is laughable. In the car world, it never ceases to amaze me how hard people will shit on a car when it comes out and then after it gets canned rush to its defense. The eclipse was the butt of EVERY. SINGLE. JOKE. when it was around. Yeah, drag racers liked the blocks and relative cheapness of the platform, but everyone and their uncle took massive shits on the second and third gen eclipse because the average buyer was a broke 20-something with half of an unpainted body kit on an eclipse whose best days were far behind it. Now people act like it’s some hallowed word that needs to be “respected” because god forbid Mitsubishi tries to avoid bankruptcy. And let’s not get into the fact that the 3000GT was a terrible car when new due to costing more than almost every other car in its bracket and being......slower! And heavier! And less reliable! So it now makes a great used buy because it fell so many rungs down the ladder.

Lukewarm take - the eclipse was a shitbox, at least Mitsubishi finally put the name on a car that can take the hate and not be affected.

Warmer take - When I become king of the world, I will put a filter on the internet that says if you judge a car solely by its worth as a used vehicle, you will be assigned to drive nothing but automatic, 4 cylinder, USDM econoboxes for a minimum of 3 years.

It could be possible, but I have doubts it would be until after the launch of the F-Pace, which likely has huge margins. XJ is so old now that it has to be mostly profit, too (although volumes must be tiny).
